What size sprockets are you running for spirited riding and track
days. Gearing where second gear clutched wheelies are not ou of the question. I'm pretty sure my bike is stock gearing or geared taller. At 90mph in 6th gear I'm at 4200 rpm. I'm geared way too tall. Suggestions?

A lot of people like 15/43. Stock is 16/41. I recently made the change. It seemed a little too low at first. Got used to it and now I love it. Second gear no clutch wheelies are a snap on my bike. Your results may vary.

I personally don't know how these guys ride with 15\43 gearing. 1st must be all but unusable but too each his own. I run 16\43 and with that gearing the bike can pull to red-line in 6th plus the added bonus of you can still run the stock 102 link chain and it will shorten the wheel base by around 5mm for quicker turn in. But like always YMMV. ;)

I was at 16/43 for a little while. It was alright. Definitely better than stock. I like my new set up much better.

I wouldn't say first is unusable. Getting pretty close though. The higher gears feel so much better now though.

Well like I said, to each his own but I do know for a fact that my bike, with my fat 250lbs ass on board, will happily flip over backward if you are hamfisted in first. Hell it is impossible to keep the front wheel on the ground if you wick it up even fairly quick.

So, IMHO, running a 15\43 set up would make 1st all but unusable and I like having a 6 speed. Another advantage of 16\43 is that the speedo error is right at 10% so it is real easy to do the conversion in your head without the need for a speedo healer.

This is all just my personal opinion and take it for what it is worth. Keep the motor above 6k and it will pull just fine without the need to gear so low you start loosing the ability to use all the gears.

For a VTR to ACTUALLY turn 4200 rpm at 90 mph in 6th it would have to be geared 20% taller than stock- a 17 tooth front and 38 tooth rear- which I doubt this is.

AND, the speedo healer would have had to correct for the change 'cause changing sprockets doesn't change rpm at mph.

Best way to determine your situation is to simply count the teeth on each sprocket.

Yea yea yea. I'm on the road working right now posting on the internet in a hotel room. I can't go out and count the teeth and I should have this weekend. It might be 4200 RPM at 80 in top gear. Regardless it's geared way too tall. I'm a firm beleiver in short shifting to get to second gear on all my bikes anyway. I hate shifting hard through the mouse trap.

Ha! When you get tired of singing old Beatles songs and have a spare minute, you might count the teeth on the rear sprocket. My guess is there are 41 and you've got stock up front too.

If so, the smart, quick, easy and cheap thing to do is buy and install a 43 tooth rear sprocket. That puts your gearing in line with other sport twin liter bikes and in my opinion is the best gearing to have on the VTR.

What size stock chain and sprockets are on the thing? 530 or 525? Anyone have some spare sprockets in that size they aren't using and want a few bucks for?

More, it will spin the odometer more miles than you actually ride.

I'm going to order a new 520 chain and sprockets set. I will get
the 43 rear and a 15 and 16 front. I figure throw the 16 on there when I decide to log some heavy miles in July. I have a 3 thousand mile trip planned down to the Appalachians.
