Question:

Can the '98 - 02 gas tank be converted to run on the VTR?

The front mount bolts look similar. I have the possible to pick up a slightly dented tank to try it out.

You left out an important item: what model 98-02?

Yes it can.
I recommend the tank that you already have an eye on, the biggest issue is airbox to tank clearance and what to do with the tank / seat junction.
Now that I have done the job I would probably leave the underside of the tank alone and modify the airbox instead. The '98 to '01 tank is fairly close to fitting and is a bolt on in the front but the rear mount and seat will be the biggest obstacles.

Kinda thinking the ride from so cal to USGP would be better with more fuel on board.

month shouldn't be a problem at all if you spend the time and get after it

I am gonna do this in mid July for a road trip in August.

Already have a 1999 donor tank and a Fab shop near and a MC mech to help me during mistakes.

What foibles do I need to look out for.

If you'd rather be extra speedy about it - I have the tank and seat that 'Bling modified in my storage building. It's never been unboxed from the member that I got it from because after I bought the tank and seat I bought a VFR.
