Which front end?

Considering changing the frontend on my firestorm.

What are my options? Had a friend with a 954 frontend that was pretty happy with it.

Any thoughts or advice?

cbr's: 900,929,954,1000rr and rc51 have all been tried with success. With those you'll need the entire front end from the wheel up plus some sort of clip on solution. AFAIK, no one has posted a 600rr mod yet and I'm surprised.

I went with an F4i.

There's lots of combos that have been done by members here. A search of the archives will help you make a quality decision. Your riding style, body size and weight, and road conditions prevalent for your area are important too. For lighter riders, working over the stock equipment is the best. And easiest. After that it's tires, tires, tires.

I have a CBR1000 front... I love it, havent tested it with other swaps but doesnt matter im happy

929/954 parts are pretty plentiful.... so not a bad choice...

RC51 will give you a bit more flexibility on where you set the forks in the triples as they are the longest (yet still shorter than stock VTR's.) but are probably more expensive...

I'm using basically an entire RC51 (SP1) setup with a 929 lower triple and I like it alot.

Hawkrider did the same transplant over the winter and reports are all good. He's 225/upstate NY/knows how to bring it.

So, would this fit?

That's what I swapped to, so yes. I have the 04-05 forks with an 06 wheel. The rotors on the 06 are bigger. I had to buy some spacers to move the calipers out, but that is a stock part. A non issue if you get the 04 wheel.

I wound up using 929/954 triples though, so I can't be 100% sure the 1000rr triples are the same. A search will turn that info up.

I have the same set up as Slowhawk RC everything but 929 lower triple and I used a 929 wheel but you have to do some modifying to make the wheel work. If I did it again I would use the RC front wheel and change the back to a 900RR rear to match

The 1000RR triples are a few millimeters (or fractions of inches if you prefer) wider which makes it neccessary to trim the fairings, also it has some ugly mounting holes for the steering damper of the CBR1000RR (which needs a speedsignal from the CDI to work, I gave up that project...)

I'd recommend getting this os something similar as it has the wheel axle and spacers, then get a matching wheel/rim with rotors, and match it up with a set of 954/929 triples and you are set to go...:D

BTW: Dang it, if you got that... If so you got it cheaper than what I had to pay for mine... Altough I got a working master cylinder though...

And a word of advice... with those brakes... it's two fingers... Nothing more dammit... My first trialrun I did a front end wheely combined with black marks... and I nearly wet my pants... Totaly different beast than stock...

vermontzx6r 09-14-2008 04:01 PM

is it possible to install cbr 900-1000 rotors and calipers without swapping the entire front end??

Erik S. 09-14-2008 04:22 PM

Vermont, I'll find the thread later, it's about which brakes are bolt on. Includes pistion sizes for the M/Cs and calipers.

RC, 929/954, F4i, and a list of others are nearly bolt on.

I did 929 calipers and M/C. Only had to shave a few thousandths off of the mounting ears. M/C bolted right on. Stock rotors.

02 GSXR1000 TOKICO 6 PISTON CALIPERS WITH STOCK VTR MC / EBC HH PADS / SS LINES IS ALL YOU NEED. HUGE DIFFERENCE OVER STOCK!!!!

This is a bolt on and go mod. no shaving /adding / shimming / twisting / bending / swearing / cussing / temper tantrums necessary!!

As for the forks, Racetech springs / Gold valves. Then have a repetable shop set the suspension for you. I weigh 250 lbs and it is set up and handles like a MO FO! Best money ever spent.

Sablotny 09-14-2008 05:27 PM

SPRHK - can you give me a ballpark of what the shop charged you for the springs, valves and labor? I'm going to start calling shops in the area myself.

For springs and Gold valves, that should run you around $250-$275 for parts. I did the install myself and only paid for final suspension set up which ran me $35.00.
If you get a guy to charge you by the hr for the job ,ballpark it should run you 250-300 bucks. The local shop out here gets 700-800 for parts and labor. I have my own PT MC repair shop, so I have an advantage.

Tweety 09-14-2008 05:45 PM

You could always talk to Hawkrider/Greg... He's set up a couple of forks for people on the forum, Nuhawk is one of them... and he seems happy with the result...

And what he charges you for the work is what I consider close to stealing...

Not for the customer though. For them, it's a great deal. (Just to clarify, it might be taken differently than what you meant ;) )

Tweety 09-15-2008 03:55 AM

Well yeah... :) to clarify even further, it's cheap... damned cheap...
