Exhaust Splitters
 

I just read an article in the April issue of metric RoadBike about drilling a hole through the end of the exhaust pipe(s) straight down, and dropping a bolt down through and bolting it in place (Looked like poop but they did have some cool suggestions on making it look more presentable). Somehow this disrupts the exhaust wave and they were able to gain 3-4 midrange hp on the dyno. The test bike was an older harley, but the author seems to think that any v-twin could benefit from this mod - although he did say "slow-revving" v-twin. I was just wondering if anyone had tried this on the VTR, or any other bike for that matter and what the results were.

My guess is that anything that applies to a Hardley won't work on a motorcycle.

Never heard of it. From the way you describe it I have to guess this would only apply to bikes with straight pipes. Seems like it would add a little bit of back pressure, very little. Any set of pipes with cans on them, baffles or not, is going to do the same thing but much better.

Drew - The guy who wrote the article claims it will work on any v-twin with aftermarket exhaust, but I'm thinking it that the test motor is so underpowered anyway that anything would make a difference. Prob. won't work on the Superhawk, but I was curious.

I would guess that a tuned exhaust system wouldn't benefit from that. I'm more than likely bias, but I think Harley exhausts are more for show than anything else.

+1 I think that this applies to motorcycles with little to 0 back pressure - ie: strait pipes.
