929, 954 or RC51 rear wheel conversion

I'm wanting to upgrade to a 190 rear tire. If I go with a 929 rear wheel I could run a 190 and save I think four pounds. I know I'll need the wheel, cush drive and rear sprocket. I think my old rotor will bolt up.

Can it be done? and if so, what should I know before I start? Do I need special spacers? Do I use the VTR or 929 axle?

You would need new spacers for sure, contact mdbueler as he did or is doing a conversion to RC wheels. Just a question though how are you saving weight with a larger wheel and tire? I know the 5 spoke RC wheel is lighter but is the 954 wheel lighter as well?

I've been told the 929/954 wheel is lighter than the rc51 wheel. After intalling a 929 front end on my bike I beleive it because the 929 front wheel feels super light vs the vtr wheel.

Wow that's a huge differance with a spinning wheel!

Have you checked the sprocket offset between the VTR wheel and any donor wheels RC or 929/954? I'd be interested in knowing what the offset is.

I had a destroyed 929 wheel that I shouldn't of chucked. It would make an excellent mock up wheel right about now.

As far as weight go's I hear the 929 wheel is 4 lbs lighter than the rc51 wheel. Even with the rotors and tire the 929 front wheel felt really light compared to the vtr wheel without rotors.

is there enough room in the swingarm for a 190/6" rim combo?

superhawk22 04-17-2006 08:46 AM

I believe so, mdbueler was doing the conversion but I'm not sure if he ever finished. I'll have to do a search and see if he did or not.

Last post was in Feb. with nothing new so I don't know how it turned out.

Re: 929, 954 or RC51 rear wheel conversion

I have a 929 swingarm at my disposal; so I measured the distance between the spacers, 185.61 mm is what I came to. I measure my SHwk swingarm on the bike so keep in mind a little error, 164.31 mm between the spacers. That is a 21.3 mm difference in width of engine cases. So that leads me to believe that there is some difference in rear sprocket location in regards to alignment with the front sprocket. Modification to the cush drive may be necessary. But I think it is doable to convert a SHwk over to a 929/954 rear wheel.

If your planning to do a swingarm swap you're going to change the way it handles. The 929/954 swingarm is about 50mm longer than the SH so it will slow down steering not to mention look a little funky.

Nope, just giving some info on a 929/954 wheel swap with a little extra.

Gotcha, the only reason I said anything is I wanted to go that route but it's just too long.
