520 Conversion
 

I am diligently searching for a source for 520 sprockets for the vtr. I tried sprocket specialists and chapparral so far to no avail. Where have you guys gotten them for a non scalped price?

Ok so due to time constraints, I ordered JT sprockets from motorcycle superstore. I refuse to use aluminum rear so for $20 front $30 rear I got these.

That's good, esp since you're not sure on the 520. Good cheap way to experiment so you're not losing anything. I'm gonna be looking for a chain and two new sprocks tomorrow, so I'll let you know what i end up with just for the hell of it.

Like I told you , I got 17,000 on the rear AFAM and I'll get a pic of that sproc just for laughs. I think i could have gotten more, but inadvertently ran the chain a little tight for a bit. Not difficult to do with 100 links, but I found out the real way when the shock tried to throw me off on a bumpy curve haha.

just ordered 520 AFAM steel frnt and alum rear , 15/44 again, with a DID ERV chain from Sprocket Center. Should be here in a couple days. Last time i ordered was 10/26/09 from them, so 3yrs and 17,000miles later.

I know it's a little late but I get my stuff from Sprocket Center.

I have run the JT sprockets and they work well. The 2 things I didn't like was that is was pretty heavy and made a lot of noise.

I am now running one of these NEW Superlite RS7 Series 520 Conversion Steel Rear Sprocket - HONDA Sprocket Center

The "Superlite" steel sprockets seem to run fairly quiet and are noticeably weight saving over the JT stuff.

8541 that looks nice. Way better than the $88 alum with steel chainring supersprox. If I swap for gearing maybe I'll try one of those.

just got to test out my 520 set-up and I still love it, and even more with the 2 into 1 diet mod.

AFAM 15/44, DIDerv racing chain @ 102 links. I had previously noted100links on my signature and that was a booboo. I counted 100links and then added the master link so it was actually 102. My bad>sorry.

the thing that i like about the 102 links with the 15/44 is that it moves the rear wheel up to max forward position, and i mean max except for like a turn and a half on the adjuster to proper chain slack. Still have plenty of space for the 190/55. did I mention quicker turn in and transitions? wow!

warning: need to be careful to triple check free play because, with the reduced chain length, it's easy to overtighten the chain. Not only is this hard on the chain and sprockets, but it is also dangerous in that it constricts the up/down movement of the swingarm, which upsets/bottoms out the chassis, esp noticeable in fast undulating sweepers. Get scary fast. Won't make that mistake again! haha.

the other thing i wanted to mention here in order that someone else might benefit was that at 17000mi(actual), the AFAM teeth got skinny, but the front sprocket and the RK gold chain showed undetectable wear when measured against new. Trying to conserve some funds and for the sake of experimentation, I decided try a new 43 tooth steel to see if i could extend the life of the good components. Made sense that a great chain and a steel front sprocket might still be in spec while an aluminum rear was shot, esp since the measurements I did seemed to confirm this.

The short answer for this hypothesis ............"wrong". Still not sure why. It appears that the chain and sprockets age together, marry each other, wear-in conjunctively, etc., because when i added the new steel rear, the one thing i noticed was vibration in the pegs and bars. Well i ran this for a few days to see if the vibration would subside, but the old chain and front sprock would have nothing to do with their new partner. Proof of this was that the short time I ran the new steel rear sprocket, it already began to show a little wear so i took it off and put the skinny toothed AFAM back on til my new ones came, and they were all happy once again..........no more vibes.

This experience with vibration made me think of earlier threads where members complained of hands tingling/going to sleep and other related symptoms and was wondering if any of these might have been caused by mis-matched drive components. I always attributed their complaints to too tight bar-gripping because I have never experienced peg and bar vibration with the hawk until this happened.

Nath, I am kinda doing the same thing in that my old rear 45t was wearing but the chain & front look fine so I put a 43t on (had it laying around) just to get me at least through winter or as far as it will take me.

I had the opposite effect. The 43 (used on my F3) made everything smoother. Figure cuz the old rear was beat.

I really cant figure what front size I have. Thought it was 15 but did an engine swap over the summer and lost track. Dont feel like removing the cover.

well that's a good deal. you won one! If mine would have been smooth, I would have won also, but sometimes losing can be sweet. If you want my slightly worn 43/520 steel sprocket, i'll send it to you. Let me know.
