looking to do the 520 conversion, but i am not sure about that combo. is it to much for the street? how bad does it affect gas miles. any peoples advice on that combo is appreciated.

Mac, I'm running stock 530 chain with 15/43 setup and love it everywhere but out on the interstates cuz it gets buzzy when you're in 6th gear at 75 mph where you'll be turning 5K rpm.

I personally think it's too much. Plus your mpg/range will be even further reduced. I bought that same ratio for my current VFR and ended up getting another 520 stock front so now its a 0/+2 ratio. FWIW

Also if you are considering buying from SCUM of all parts on ebay, you've been warned.

I am running 520 15x43 and average around 45mpg on my 120mile daily commute. Speed stays below 70mph and I don't get on the gas. 70mph is 4500rpm. When I refuel, takes about 2.5 gallons. When I go to play it is loads of fun.

are they known for junk or something?

I have been running 15/43 for awhile now and I like it.

i am looking at doing a chain conversion over the summer ...

i do a lot of interstate riding at 70+ so i dont want buzzing but i want to improve responsiveness and acceleration ............. (not losing much mpg either)

what would be the best way to go?

Syn, I'd go down 1 in the front and leave the back stock. You can use your original chain if you stick with 530 saving lots of $$$:thumbsup:

Also, if you find it's not enough for you picking up a 43 for the back later is no big deal;)

I love the conversion. I bought mine from sumofallparts on Ebay...no problems with my experience. Reaper and I rode the other day, we filled up at the same time and then when it was time to get gas again, I took 2.49 gallons, while he took 2.9 gallons. He is running the stock gearing. He also weighs 250 compared to my 220, but I was wearing full leathers (heavy) so do the math. Interstate riding isn't that bad, but I usually don't ride more than 50 miles on that boring road at a time. If you like backroad blasting, and aren't worried about keeping up with Busa's at 180, do it!

i did the same .... sum of all parts & went -1 +2. i bought a speedo healer to correct the difference ( even though it was fun seeing +170 )

i'm do again as the rear sprocket is toast ( vortex sprockets are pretty soft ) and will buy the same kit again.

I won't deter the thread, but I will input my two cents on the matter of "Scum of all parts" at "the 'bay":
They may have changed since then, but three years ago I bought an '03 Yamaha R1 swingarm from them and they put the fucking thing in a box with no packaging - literally just a cardboard box and sent it up to me. When it got here, I immediately noticed where the shock linkage mounts, the tabs had been kicked and dragged from there to here over concrete flooring and whatever else it drug along during shipping.
I emailed pics and complained and never got a reply back.

I'm going to try that combo on the stock chain here shortly... I know the 520 kits on ebay are cheap, but any good places to buy steel sprockets for stock chain other than Dinnis Kirk... they aren't to bad on there, but if there are cheaper sites, i would love to know..

I have a -1/+1, no problems. Did notice a bit of a change in the low end. Makes it a little easier to pull wheelies:) But haven't looked at the gas mileage yet to see if it has affected it. My 2 cents

i bought my kit end of 2/07. i don't note mileage but i imagine this sprocket has 4k-6k miles. i don't commute much... spirited rides & trackdays and the occasional 1 wheel romp ; )

in my years of riding i've noticed that once a sprocket starts these signs of wear they seem to go downhill fast.

i havn't measured the chain length yet but i've been VERY impressed with the lack of stretch on the chain. it rarely needs a small adjustment.

VORTEX - now has a hard coating ( retails for like $10 more ) i'd ( i'll ) upgrade next go round.

I can see that that sprocket is starting to shark, its about time to swap it out, or reverse it.

wow... first off thanks for taking the lords name in vain over something so small. i hope thats worth it. second of all, get off your high horse. maybe things have changed since those posts. maybe hind sight is 20/20 for some people since then. maybe after posting up those post, somebody found something better. i dont know. i do know that i dont care for your attitude about the situation. you see, this is a forum. its not a book. maybe you should go read a book, and leave this forum for people to discuss issues. what does it matter to you what people ask about?

Just curious, ... How long did it take you to do the search, make several different posts and write an insult that was less than helpful to a fellow member? Was it worth your time to be that uptight. Or maybe you could have spent that same time and actually been pleasant to a fellow member and helped. In answer to the posters question....

15/43 is nice on the back roads and like... but a bit much is you ride super slab. We (wife and I who also rides) have a 75 mile one way slab ride to an area we like go to on weekends.. I love the 15/43 when we take all back roads,,, but hate the gearing when we take the 70+ MPH country highway or main freeway.

Second of all, yes, this is a forum. If you ask a question that has been asked hundreds of times before, one that has been beaten to death then resurrected to be beaten some more, and then more, and then more, then you are apt to get at least one sarcastic and/or annoyed response. Deal with it.

Maybe not everyone here has the same beliefs as everyone else. And if you cant deal with that, then living in the real world is not for you. But I agree with J.J. Do a search. There are a trillion threads about gearing. Usually 1 every week and a half. I'm pretty sure that there are at least 3 on the first page. If you have a different question that wasn't answered in one of the trillion threads, by all means post away. They wouldn't store all of the dated threads if they weren't important, and/or didn't have useful information thats already been discussed. I'm not trying to be disrespectful or rude, but I'm sure thats how a lot of people feel.
