ZG Windscreen gap/fitment issues
 

Bought my 2003 hawk used with a Puig screen. Took it off today to install new ZG Sport Touring screen ordered from online retailer.

Fitment looks terrible where the screen seems to have some hooks to go around/on the mirror bolts, but it is a bad fit there, it just rests on top of them leaving a great big bleeding gap between the fairing at the windscreen where the windscreen should hook around the mirror bolts!

Now I put the Puig back on and I get the same gap at the same spot.

The nuts/fasteners line up fine and the front nose/fairing is flush with the screen but really? I can't believe this gap was there the whole time and I didn't notice until now...

Is this how it should look?

Should I be removing the mirror to install/remove a windshield? Already have the instrument cluster off to get the lower fasteners flush...

Am I losing my mind?!?!!

Yes it's 2 bolts a side, take the mirrors off, get everything lined up, and make your life easy. I can say 99% you're ending up with a gap because you're trying to put it on with the mirrors still in place. Get everything started and don't completely tighten anything down until they're all in and everything is lined up. These type of things, like putting fairings on, require a little finesse and patience so you don't end up with stress cracks the first time you hit a pothole.

I suppose it's possible your fairing stay could be bent, but I'll bet if you remove the mirrors it'll slip into place the way it's supposed to.

Yeah got her on now. Guess it doesn't help that I just quit smoking and have been looking for a frustrating situation to break down and have a Dunhill again!!!!

By the way how much did you spend on that screen?

I'd have to double check... Under 100 for sure. I think 85 bucks (USD).

I'll toss up a quick review of it compared to the Puig tomorrow when I can test it out.

I was fine with the head buffeting from the Puig since I'm 6'4" tall, and I could tuck in to escape completely but I wanted something that cuts down on the parachute effect when I'm riding normal/upright.

Fingers cross! (Still looks cooler than the Puig I think!)

I've wondered over the years if I'd like that screen. Looking forward to your critique of it. Post up some more pics at all angles if ya can. We all enjoy the Hawk porn if for nothing else!

With regards to the mirrors, I don't think some nylon insert locknuts are the worst idea either in place of the stock cap nuts, which in my experience are prone to vibrating off. Nice looking bike by the way, the blue looks great. Welcome aboard!

Well I rode around for a couple hours today.

Overall I'm very satisfied with the windscreen. It definitely cuts back on the parachute effect in a normal riding position to almost 'zero', which was my main issue I wanted to sort out. Up to around 65mph you're golden in normal riding position. Some head buffeting still but that's expected since it seems to redirect wind off the body and up to the head more (keeping in mind I'm 6'4" tall).

Above 65, when I go to a tucked-in position, there's less space/distance for my helmet to get behind the screen. Once you're behind it, you're fine and experience very little wind buffeting on my back/body all the way up to about 115 (give me a break, it was a little windy!).

I'm generally happy with the fit and finish, but the Puig that it replaced left no gap between the pointed triangular piece of fairig on the nose, but with the ZG Sport Touring I'm getting some gap here, which is pressing all my OCD buttons. I'll have to remove all the screws again and see if I can't get it more flush... Is there some weatherstripping that should be here or something? I do recall pushing back a little piece of rubber stripping behind the cluster when I installed it...

I can try and answer any questions you might have, and also welcome any tips on that gap I've got going on!

It looks as if it needs to move down a 1cm or so. Have you pics of the new screen before you fitted it? to see if the holes in it are fixed or slotted. As you might have to use a drill to open out the holes to give you the adjustability for it to neatly fit.

Sadly, no pics before I fitted it. What I'll have to do is loosen/remove all the screws again and try and push it down another CM or two.

That might also give me a bit more room to duck behind it in a tucked-in riding position. At the end of the day, it's a sport-touring windscreen and I am pretty large in the torso. The Puig was designed as more of a racing/bubble-type screen where the points is that you can tuck in behind it and be out of the wind.

Give and take with both windscreens and I do like them both for those two very different reasons!

Will see what happens after adjusting this ST 'screen properly.

Having looked at it again, the blue piece of fairing that meets at the bottom of the windscreen is actually lined up properly, but there is indeed a gap that is not sitting flush. That is, the windscreen can't be just moved up by a cm or two, it's in Place it just isn't flushing up right with the front piece of fairing on the nose. If you push down on the fairing piece, it looks perfect. Sigh...

Which is strange because there definitely about 1cm of windscreen extending on either side past the edge of the fairing closest to the rider.

Try taking the screen out and overlaying it over the previously fitting one and seeing what's different. Mark up with a chino pencil.

Then you'll see if new holes need to be drilled / slots cut to get it fitting as it should.

Yeah that's definitely an option.

I just think it's a little bogus to drill holes/resize holes in brand new product.

It's not like it's a universal-fitment 'screen, it's designed for our bikes.

Anyways... it's not THAT off, but the fact that the front is not flush against the nose of the fairing like the Puig was is beginning to bother me.
