Strange VTR, do u like it?

Soo...as you guys know winter here in Canada can be pretty long and my riding season last year got cut short when i low sided my bike due to a cager cutting me off and me locking my front brake....long story short, front forks bent, right exhaust ruined, entire front fairing destroyed plus various other minor things broken, oh and the rear subframe mangled beyong fixing...

got it all fixed up and upgraded the front end to F4i forks/triples/brakes and was gonna go with a street fighter look but came across a cheap race fiberglass fairing of another bike...so i decided to see if i can make it fit...

what do u guys think?

a lot of custom works been happening...

its gonna be converted to a single seater as u can see the race rear part. thats a spare ZX7R tail (i also have a zx7r) that i've cut the rear fairing out and then fiberglassed around...as u can see its not done but u get the idea of it...in person it looks really good, just like a sharks mouth

the undertail will be stock modified to fit the new upper part.

the right clipon is straight from the F4i using the F4i throttle tube (same as VTR) and the killswitch/start button stalk. It takes some wire tracing and slight modifications to make it work with the stock VTR wiring, but it does clip right in, its just that wire locations in the actual clip are in different spots. looks a LOT better than stock VTRs outdated stalk. the throttle cables come out differently and longer throttle cables should definitively be used because it binds up the throttle when turned to the left all the way.

also since i mangled up my stock front stay i've made a custom one off from aluminium tubing....about twice as light as stock and just as sturdy (or i'd like to think so)

a whole lot more work needs to be done, but basically i know people will go (oh look a ZX6R ninja...wait?! Ninjas dont sound like that?!)

it'll be painted flat black....

as for the body kit, some trimming around the radiators is necessary to get it to fit nicer....a V cut seen by the front exhaust runner has to be made so you can make the fairing narrower. I used stock VTR mount locations for security.

comments? ideas? i'm going to China for a month so this project is being placed on hold until then....gonna miss her!

oh here she is before the crash

I would definitely like to see how it turns out. So far so good.

Death Cattle 12-25-2008 09:06 PM

it looks like it has great potential and is in the right hands.

Looks pretty sweet so far! Keep posting the progress

Hard to compare anything to that "before" pic, that paint job was sweet.

I would try to mimic that with the new fairings.

Good Luck

ZZR600 front end? It's actually my least favorite part of the bike.

Very similar looking otherwise.

Looks like it will turn a few heads; Nice work!

autoteach 02-26-2009 10:03 PM

ummm, maybe the pics don't show it, but how are you doing the radiators, I couldn't see them through the vents in the body work and I was wondering what type of flow you were going to expect. i like the bodywork, and maybe this one is a candidate for an undertail radiator.

happytrack44 02-27-2009 04:07 AM

Big girls need love too!

Red_Liner740 02-27-2009 06:48 PM

LOL

Radiators sit in the stock location and the vents sit right over them so the cooling wont be an issue

its F4i front end and the body kit is from a 2001 ZX6R ninja, so yea close to the ZZR

the tail has been scrapped because i found a cheap tail fairing to fix up and it'll be easier than to modify what i already have...

sprngs coming faster than i thought and i want to be able to ride it soon...

the F4i front end spacers for axle and brakes have been made, just gotta finish up the lighting (two projectors peeking from the airscoops, it'll leave the rest of the fairing clean.

i actuallly wasnt a fan of the paint job, i got it like that....it just seemed a bit dated...flames and all

new paint job is just gonna be home job, either flat black or titanium gray in which case it'll be shot with clear as well...

Well there she is....pretty much done! only thing after these pictures is a single projector headlight with HID in the middle of the airscoop.

whatcha think? all i know is, people have no clue what it is....the look of confusion is priceless...

Nice man I dig it.

Keep a close eye on the coolant temp. It's bad enough at low speeds with the stock fairing. You can always add ducts and/or fans.

+1

The VTR needs the fairing to draw air through the radiators, so you may have to do a few mods to that fairing section to get yours right.

Good work on the job.

Derbig Mooser 04-17-2009 11:27 AM

A little bit of internal ducting might do the trick, or possibly a fan on each radiator for low speed op.

dshakes 04-29-2009 01:28 PM

Good work my friend

Hotbrakes 04-29-2009 05:13 PM

Sweet...looks like you get better wind protection too.

supermarto 05-13-2009 06:05 PM

Looks very prototype...

The tendency is to minimalize.
That means make everything half the size and half the weight.
How many pounds did your bike actually gain...
Also did you hear about mass centralization?

NAVY8TR 05-13-2009 11:22 PM

your front end reminds me of a whale shark. maybe you should put some white dots and some sucker fish on it too;) Nah, really tho I like it a lot. I always love looking at custom designed bikes. Its a great way to borrow/create ideas for your own. It gives a lot of personality. Looks great. You keeping that paint though?

latest pictures

its got a full F4i front end on it, including the wheel, hence the white rim, which i will partially match the back one to by adding a white stripe to the lip.

the primer and paint are gone. stupid paint would get damanged by any exposure to fuel so i jsut screw it, stripped it off from the FIBERGLASS body (for people who are grumbling about weight) along with 3 other layers of paint...definitively lighter. now its painted in bed liner pait and i love it. minimal prep and easy to make it look good.

i'm failing to see just how i've gained any weight

people who add the full fairing belly pan gain weight, if anything i've lost weight.

notice that the body kit is fiberglass? the entire body kit with the headlight projector (also about half the weight of the regular headlight) weights in about 10lbs less than the half fairing VTR came with. the new front stay is made of aluminum and not steel so thats a few pounds shaved off as well.

i'm glad that the fairing make the bike look more stable and heavier. but looks can be deceiving.

so the weight reductions are as following

lighter body kit
projector headlight VS stock headlight
shortened Yoshi alu pipes
cut and shortened undertail
lighter mirrors

as for the coolant temps, now it sits right at the middle unless i'm onthe highway...airflow really sucks on the rads and in city traffic the fan cycles on and off, but it never runs more than 30 seconds

i'm thinking of adding an aux fan, a small one that will always run on the left radiator....

we'll see if this becomes a problem as the ambient temps rise

the other option is a front mount rad from a differnt bike and a larger oil cooler

Soichiro Honda (sp) is probably turning over in his grave; but it does look pretty good.

rbrais 05-14-2009 07:41 AM

I was pretty iffy when I saw your first pictures, but the finished product is cool! Nice job!

supermonie 05-14-2009 09:05 AM

Wow great finish it looks good!

COLE 05-14-2009 10:13 AM

who cares bout weight ne way its not like u r racing professionally man, it looks and prob sounds great, but it does look like it would run little hotter, dont kno bout where yall live but i have most trouble with it gettin hot is cruising through town, i hate it, its not really a prob, i call 200 degrees hot, its hot on my legs, i turn it off at red lights or it ll hit 220 degrees in matter of mins
