PlastiDip Street project

Cheers Superhawk forum members!

I wanted to share what Ive been doing with my Shelby lately.

I have decided to go for a new more aggressive look for the autumn time. I wanted to go naked and PLASTIC DIP SPRAY my whole bike.
Hope you enjoy my blogged photos. Stay tuned for end results.

Cool!

1) Ventilate well to avoid OD'ing on the fumes.
2) Don't spray the dog.:eek:

andrewvophoto 10-01-2014 11:41 AM

@crankenFine
Thanks !
I started to realize I needed to vent more as the coats sprayed out. Had to open almost fully in order to breathe!
Ps- no dogs were hurt in the making

It'll be lot easier & quicker to take off the bodwork & tank to do the prepping & spraying.

andrewvophoto 10-01-2014 04:15 PM

@wicky yes I realized I might have gotten a better more thorough spray down with all parts removed. Hopefully my semi laziness doesn't kill the dip . I sprayed all angles trying to cover all edges evenly. Pictures will be posted soon!

I plastidipped a bike I was selling to make it all match....first and last bike I'll ever dip. Motorcycles that get ridden are too vulnerable, within two short rides my boot had smeared some off the tail fairing, and I imagine if ridden hard your knees would soon rub off the tank dip.

@98vtrider,

Its good to hear from someone who has personally used the plasti dip on one of their projects. Its hard i feel to really judge a product solely off of online reviews. There are so many other factors I feel that are important other than just the paint. Example, the weather outside, in a garage , outside, sunlight , spray gun, spray can, amount of coats... I guess I just wanted to find out myself hard way or not. Ive seen so many reviews of some motorcycles that have held up really well and those who have just instantly smeared and ripped. I really had so many questions. So here Is where i stand.

4 coats of FlexiDip Red ( hated this color of red )
over that 5 coats of PlastiDip (red) <overall better quality)
6 coats of Plasti Dip clear Gloss

That's a lot of coats! 15.. I think I did 4-5 coats. Some plastics I primed grey because I had to repair some spots.

How is yours holding up?

When I was selling a hawk with a single piece front fairing I had I painted the Front fairing to match with rattle cans, and it turned out amazing. Personally I can do 100x better looking finish with rattle can paint than plasti dip will ever look. the only benefit I see is you can peel it off and go back to original paint if you want.

re how it's holding

It has been holding up very nicely! Been riding for four months straight on it wit everything from jeans to leathers. No damage on high traffic areas .One issue is when I have to tie anything to the back with bungee cords as it rubs the clear coat off. Another issue is plastic dip comes off with gas. Been really careful on fill ups and have no issues. It has been outside and risen daily without noticeable wear on paint. I have to say I'm pretty satisfied. I might try redoing it another color soon. (Black or white)

I am always amazed how small the bike looks naked. It also looks like it will just loop right over on the gas. (which of course it will).

Its all preference but I cant seem to ride a naked bike and be comfortable. Looks great like that tho'. Very tuono/monster/superduke.
