How the tank fitted to the frame

After several attempts looking at the origional tank to see were I had to bash it to get it to fit level on the frame , this was achived with me kneeling down with the tank on my legs and bashing it forcefully and trying not to achive creasing it .

This Is how I got it to fit on the frame after about 45 mins .

You can see the height difference it is a lot approximatly 70mm about 2 3/4" in your money I then fabricated an alloy bracket 1/4 thick slightly angled back around 20deg this was to line up with the holes on the tank.

The bracket

This is showing the alloy bracket how it sits on the frame .

once I got the tank right I offered a donor seat (vtr 1000 of fleabay) peeled back the covering and marked it like so

Once I roughly did it I used a frett saw and cut out the foam and plastic bottom

like so then I trimmed it to fit the countour of the tank

modification of the seat

Now as you can see in the photo I had to put a slight hump in the seat to cover the tank fixing bolts because the tank was 2,3/4" of an inch higher. Now then I made a template out of insulating foam stuck it on the seat with silicone and carefully shaped it out , this when finished went to the upolstery bloke and he put foam in its place and re covered the seat cost me 40 dollers or less

The Petcock

Ok as you know the VFR tank has an ingector pump in it this hole we had to blank off and use out original pet **** I got on from fleabay , I carefully made a template in cardboard and got this cut out using a plasma cutter and then drilled it , made a template of the contact surface of the petcock placed it on the stainless then drilled it out making sure the diameter of the main hole was the same as the plastic filter , this will then squezze it tight once the rubber O ring is fitted, the 2 fixing holes i decided to tig weld these to the inside of the plate to eliminate gas from leaking from them .

The original rubber gasket fitted but i had to trim off the spikes , I decided to buy a new one

I Have used the sender unit from the vfr and trying to get a guage to work from the cockpit of the bike as well as the orange low fuel indicator , however you can use the vtr 1000 sender and adjust this to how much gas you want left in the tank on reserve by bending the float wire up or down

I hope this has been of use to someone who is thinking of doing the conversion

Hi the VFR is the one on the left hence the big hole were the ingection pump went , the VTR is the smaller tank on the right with only the sender hole , and the pet **** is covered with the black rubber ( should have took this off realy ) It is off a VFR 800 as this one fits the frame of the VTR better and it holds 4 liters more !!

So did the sending unit/float fit right in the vfr tank, and do you have any pics of the full bike with the new tank?

I'm not sure where it was indicated in this thread that it was a 6th gen. It is obvious from the post that it is a vfr800 tank. Superbling put on a 6th gen, while Kai Ju put on a 5th gen. I'm just trying to match up a couple of things, as I just purchased what "appears" to be the 6th gen, but my knowledge is very limited.

Nevermind.... It is a 5th gen.

5th Gen - '98 to '01

6th Gen - '02 to '09

RANGE !!

Sorry have not been on here for a while , as I purchased a YVPS 31K AND A 750 KETTLE ;-)...........

So the final result , done some touring and the range is around 150 miles till the light comes on but I did bend the steel up a little to give me more on the reserve so safely do 160 then fill it , average speeds 70 mph occasional blast to 140 so as it was before a great improvement ...

as the crown jewls being affected my stomach fits snugly into the tank so keeps the away lol ......

Check out Kai's write up. Plenty of info, even had me thinking about it for a while.
