ooh, you should paint your radiators black but paint the radiator screen yellow. i think that'd look pretty frickin cool. i painted mine black (high-temp paint) and it looks much better.

Thanks!

The Acerbis headlight/flyscreen was what I was hoping to buy, but I ended up buying a different one off eBay from a UK company. I'll probably try to get an Acerbis one if I need a replacement in the future.

As for painting the rads, it's definitely something I'm contemplating. Do you have pictures of yours?

Re: My own street-fighter project

That looks mean, like the headlight package.

I re-sprayed my rads bright silver and the screens semi-gloss black, it makes a subtle contrast but noticeable and better than the Hawaiian Rust color they were.

You might want a bold statement, but here is a pic to give you an idea of the black and yellow.

Aloha,

Ed

Hawaiian Rust! LoL What part of Hawaii are you in? I was just there a year ago, and all I saw were Harleys.

The rads look good. What prep is required for painting them?

Re: My own street-fighter project

I live near Honolulu on Oahu. Yeah Harleys are numerous, but there is a strong hold out of us "independents". The Harley culture here is very family oriented and you'll often see other brands letting them ride with them. We even ride slower so they can keep up. All kidding aside most of the riders are very cool.

To prep the radiators first I had to pick out all the gravel from the pavement surfing practice and straighten all the bent fins. I wire brushed the tanks, blew them off with compressed air and wiped everything down with thinner, being very gentle with the fins. I used Dupli-Color High Heat Aluminum #1606 in three thin layers (?maybe four?) a couple of hours apart. When I finished spraying I gave them a couple of days to dry.

The screens were a mess with surface rust. I had them media blasted and powder coated in a semi-gloss black by the guy who powder coated (Hi temp powder) my exhaust pipes.

I put everything back on the bike with in a few days so I could use the engine heat to do the final curing.

Be prepared for a bit of smoke and smell when you run the engine. You get a good curing of the paint from the engine heat. It took about four times of running the engine before I noticed the smoking stopped. It might cure faster If you can go for a ride. I still had a bunch of work to do before being road ready.

The main thing would be to take your time. Rushing the painting part will just get runs or load up the fins and block them off.

Re: My own street-fighter project

I had my radiators cleaned by an ally radiator specialist, and he said whatever you do, do not paint them as it reduces the cooling capacity.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but thought I should point that out.

Re: My own street-fighter project

So far I have not seen any ill effect of the paint. It does get fairly warm here and I don't recall seeing the temp gauge rise more than a needle width past half way. I will try to keep better tabs on it during stop and go traffic and post the results.

Is half way already too hot for this engine? I do not have a numerical reference for the needle positions. Can someone let me know what the range marks equate to?

I guess I could put a toggle switch on the fan circuit to start cooling earlier. Many sport bike riders here have done that due to heat issues.

Thanks for the info.

Re: My own street-fighter project

ROTFL!

I'm sorry but;

"The high quality plush covers feature an embroidered SPOON insignia for durability".

How does an embroidered insignia add durability?

And "SPOON" (what for your nose)?

Is that like our very own "Hawaii's Natural High"?
A store here where you can get your rolling papers, water bongs, Cheach and Chong bobble head dolls, and "Pure Test Detox"?

One last thing;
If their Priceless Imports they care so much about have leaking brake reservoirs shouldn’t they FIX them?

I call them Free Advertising.

But yeah, they're just regular wristbands from a friend's company (trying to help put the word out).

Along with soaking up fluid should it spill out of the reservoir, it's supposed to prevent UV rays from damaging the brake fluid inside our clutch and brake cups.

But I like the advertising reason...

Yeah, I never understood wrapping reservoirs in wristbands. One function of a reservoir is to aid cooling when the fluid gets hot. Why would you want to keep heat in?

And if you are a racer and it's leaking, how would you pass tech?

Also, seems like there clear for a reason....ie so you can see if the fluid levels are low, with a quick glance....hmmmm......now that's thinking outside the box....

You could also say that it wouldn't take too long to check under the wristbands before the ride.

If there's a problem with your brakes, you'd know when squeezing the lever (part of my odd pre-ride check...I won't get into the weird stuff).

All things considered, I may put the fairings back on. I miss having wind protection on the highways and at elevated speeds.

You're telling me. I finally figured out what ALT + F4 does. Apparently, it does speed up your computer. Just does it in a roundabout way...
