Just picked up a lower

Thanks again to eBay (how did I ever get by before eBay? lol), I just picked up a brand new Sharkskinz lower fairing for my VTR. It is primed and ready to be painted. I will likely be painting it black to match my undertail and hugger (and tank bra). I can't wait to get it installed :)

Isn't modding fun? :)

I am not sure whether it is race of street, but it is made to fit on the stock upper so I beleive tht makes it street?

I will send you pic when it is on "22", lol. Sorry, but I just ahd to get that in there. Besides, your bike is tricker than mine anyhow, you have to leave some for the others too, lol

cheers :)

NO I must have it ALL MUWHAHA!! Is the bottom of the belly open or is it solid like it would hold fluids?

EngineNoO9 06-06-2006 11:01 AM

sharkskinz makes a race lower I thought... least the website says so... It looks just like the street one too and is the same price too if I remember correctly...

not sure about the bottom of it but I plan on using it for the street anyhow. It is brand new, still in primer mode and ready to be painted. The chap who sold it had bought it but sold the bike before installing it.

I thought the race lower was designed to fit the Sharkskinz upper and the street one was designed to fit teh OEM one. AS this one, I am told, is made to fit the stock upper, I would have to assume it is a street version.

One last thing: I was thinking of painting it black to match my hugger, undertail and bra. Comments?

cheers

No it will fit either, the only difference is the race one is enclosed while the street one is open. It has to be closed on the bottom so you don't get fluids on the track.

EngineNoO9 06-06-2006 11:37 AM

also holds water too  my bud with his race 600rr got it full of rain this past weekend cause it POURED when we were out. pretty funny to see so much water spill out when we loaded them back up onto the truck

superhawk22 06-06-2006 11:42 AM

Yeah 3 quarts of it.

EngineNoO9 06-06-2006 11:50 AM

that's ironic since our bikes hold 4 quarts of oil

I think it is the street version (see pic) as there do seem to be holes on the bottom of it.

what about the colour gents? What about the colour????? lol

Hmmmm.....I was thinking maybe a Hawaiian theme? hehehehe :)

mikstr 06-07-2006 05:10 AM

Hawaiian huh? interesting...... wouldn't there be a danger of the grass catching on fire against the hot exhaust pipe though? Of course, I may have to do a search to see if they make grass skirts out of asbestos.

Thanks Greg, I am off on a totally different tangent now.... :)

Well Black being of course the Fastest color, it only makes sense that you would want to add some speed to your slower bike....but I don't think in this rare occasion that I would go with, black...maybe a dark grey, even though it would be a slower color...LOL

mikstr 06-07-2006 08:02 AM

thanks :)

I may go to the OEM blue too, my concern there is matching the colour as I don't want to end up with some half-ass match.

cheers
Mikstr

P.S. So I guess the Hawaiian theme was not one of your faves?

willie 06-07-2006 08:58 AM

that would be the race bellypan.............

superhawk22 06-07-2006 09:24 AM

Yep, should have rubber plugs for the holes to hold the fluid. That one's going to make you hot because it doesn't vent so you should give it to me and I'll look for a street one for you.

mikstr 06-07-2006 10:45 AM

interesting offer...I am touched by your concern, lol

to be honest, I am a bit concerned about the heat factor though. I do have my pipes heat wrapped so that should help though. Anyone have any experience with one of the these for the street?

cheers

superhawk22 06-07-2006 11:38 AM

Hey just trying to help a brother out. I don't think it'll be too bad but if you run into a problem you could always cut a u shape in the bottom. Sharkskinz also says that if you have aftermarket exhaust to cut a hole in it. there's a picture on thier site for that, I don't know if you still have the stock head pipe or not.

mikstr 06-07-2006 11:52 AM

thanks brother :) I always knew I could count on you guys, shucks!!!!

I am running the stock header (for the foreseeable future too). I do sense that the lower will trap heat though and this is one of the reasons I was hoping to find a larger oil cooler. Maybe I will add some more Water Wetter to the engine coolant mix as a stop-gap measure. Given that I do not plan on racing my bike, I may just let loose with a drill and help generate some airflow that way.

cheers

superhawk22 06-07-2006 11:56 AM

Try it out first and see what happens, but seriously if I find a street one maybe we could work a trade.

mikstr 06-07-2006 12:12 PM

Hi again,

I would be open to a trade. Truth be told, I think I prefer the look of the Pyramid lower if you can find one. The unit I just picked up is brand new, apparently having never been installed (still in primer colour ready to be painted). Keep me posted or write me at motoetsports@hotmail.com, I may be interested in selling it (could possibly arrange to have it shipped directly to you in fact). Let me know :)

superhawk22 06-07-2006 12:15 PM

I'll let you know....funds are a little tight right now though trying to get the house ready to put on the market.

willie 06-08-2006 02:40 PM

not to stir the pot, but I have a race lower on my sh & the temp gauge never goes above the halfway mark, Although it is still early june and the hot part of the summer hasn't arrived......................

superhawk22 06-08-2006 02:43 PM

I didn't mean that the bike would get hotter, just that it will trap the hot air and the rider will feel it more than the street version. Although it will block some of the air that blows on it, that's all.
