Anyone know a Black Oxide coater?
 

I'm looking to get some bolts black oxide coated and am looking for a known source. It's only around 12 small machine screws, so i'd hate to pay like a $50 minimum charge. Anyone know someone who can do a small run for me?

I would order hardware that is already black oxide coated, but these are specialty fasteners for Superhawk bodywork...

I've already google searched, but i'm looking to find someone who has personal experience with someone.

hmmmm...

I'd like to learn how to do that, not just for nuts and bolts but suspension linkages and other parts.

I'll let you know if I figure it out because apparently no one knows anyone

The difference between coatings can be very complicated. Hard to know what is just a look-a-like, and what is real black oxide coating.

I may call some of these guys when i get to that point.

I'd really like to pick up new fairing hardware, then send those new pieces off to be coated.

The only problem I see with those kits, after doing a little research on black oxide coatings, the room temperature process only adds a coating to the metal whereas the mid-high temperature processes actually reacts with the surface of the metal to provide mil-spec durability...

I just dont know how much durability the room temp process provides, I'll have to do some more research on it...

It just dawned on me that your local gunsmith may be able to do this for you, just a thought...

I think bluing and black oxide are different...

Bluing is a heating and oil coating of metal while cooling in oil instantly, this causing the oil to fuse with the metal, I kinda like this better, also more durable IMHO against rust and scratches than blackening... It is also similar treatment that the OEM external bolts on your bike went through at the manufacturer.

Blueing and black oxide coating are both used by gunsmiths, cant hurt to call around...

Btw what type of metal are these fasteners your looking to coat?

Stock front fairing fasteners, the ones on the sides with the odd shoulders and short threads.

I've already switched to black oxide windscreen screws. Looks way cleaner on the red. Need to switch out the tail section screws for black oxide also. I love the black on the red!!!!

Did i mention i really like how the black looks on the red???

Quality Playing in Salt Lake City just quoted me a $65 minimum lot charge to get them quoted... They could do about 50 screws in one lot charge, but they can't keep them separated, so everyone's screws would get piled into one lot, then separated out later.

They list black oxide coating for steel and stainless steel. Our fairing fasteners are definitely magnetic...

It's kinda tough because there are only 4 screws on the front fairing that are specialty screws. All the other fairing and tailsection screws can easily be ordered in black oxide.
