Winter Project... R100

So... I decided the best way to control OCMD with the SuperHawk was to bring home a project!

It's a 1979 BMW R100. I'm midway through tearing it down to powder coat the frame, subframe, and a few other parts. Misc. shiny new bits and pieces are also slowly showing up in the mail (much to my wife's dismay!)

I will probably keep the bike black and maintain a semi-cafe look overall, but I still have some cosmetic and functional decisions to make.

In the interest of not clogging the internet tubes too much I will probably just maintain a visual record of the project here: http://www.vintagebmw.org/v7/node/8334

I will try to post the occasional "hey go look at..." type update as more progress is made... or when I've just really %@&%'d things up! ;)

Very nice! I've always had a soft spot for the ol' R100's. Subscribed!

Progress...

Update! I've made some slow progress and it's time for the frame and a few other random bits to go in for powder coating...

A lot of my time has just been spent cleaning parts. The previous owner didn't appear to know about the magical concept called "cleaning". Who knew so much grime and dirt could build up on a bike?

I'm really looking forward to the switch from the "take it apart" phase to the "put it back together" phase. :)

A few photos have been added to the link in my post above.

It's interesting, that up here in Minnesota I've noticed that the last to put their bikes away for the winter, and the first to bring them out in the spring, are usually the BMW riders.

I believe it... I bet some adventure bike owners try to resist putting them away at all!

More Progress

Making a little more progress on my Airhead project. The wheels are a bit cleaner and the frame is back from powder coating!

It's nice moving from the "take apart" phase to the "put together" phase... :D

R100RS here, had a 1050 motor and BUB exhaust. It got dirty because it was ridden more than washed.

If you are careful to keep the proper lube on the input splines to the transmission and lube all the control pivot points it will ride with the reliability of an anvil.

I was helping my girlfriend's brother rebuild his R100RS after sitting for around 10 years. (was their fathers, got passed down when he passed away). Has SOO many modifications;

electronic ignition,
dual spark plugs (some kind of aftermarket or newer heads)
bored out to some bigger size,
lowered engine for lower COG,
performance carbs of one kind or another,
newer style wheels,
TONS of cosmetic and ergonomic modifications.

Of coarse the most important modification is new rubber to replace the 10 year old tires. Took a lot to get that bike back up and running! (had a small electrical fire burn up most of the electrical connections).

Eventually the bike will get back on the road, I'm glad someone else on the forum likes these bikes so much!
