Wanted to introduce myself...

Hey everyone,

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, I couldn't find an intro's thread.

Just bought a SH last week and used this forum for research prior to my purchase. I joined shortly after bringing my bike home and have since been trying to read as much as I can before I made my first post. My bike is a '98 with right around 23k on it. It already has high mount Jardine RT 1 exhaust and I'm pretty sure the CCT has been changed recently although I don't quite know how to tell if its the manual CCT...any ideas? This is my first high performance bike (rode mostly 250's and a 500 for a little while after high school) and I can't wait to take it out for a ride. I live in Grand Forks, ND where the winters are long and cold and the riding season is a short 4-5 months, but every minute worth it.

This is my first "mod-able" bike but I'm no stranger to modding. The last several years I've owned a few VW's and Audi's and did lots of turbo upgrades, suspension upgrades, etc. I can already tell my mod bug will feel right at home here! :D

Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself. If anyone is in the northeastern ND/northwestern MN area let me know (although I'm pretty sure I own the only SH in the northeast ND area).

Cheers!

Welcome.

As for the CCTs, a simple visual inspection near the rear shock on the right side will tell you.

The red thing in this pic is a APE manual cct, the OEM ones were grey and don't have the big bolt through it.

There are a few out there made by others, those will look similar but probably be different colors. And there are a few modded OEM ones that look like the stockers but with a large bolt instead of a small one in it.

Grand Forks, what a lovely place. Still have the flooding up there? Have been meaning to visit Grand Forks and Minot while riding, maybe I will be able to soon.

Thanks! I'll take a more detailed look at my bike later today.

Oh yeah... still floods like crazy. We have a nice large dike (spelling?) now plus some extensions if we need them. Fargo on the other hand got owned last year and will probably be under water again this year. As it stands right now, we have a constant snow pack of 3 1/2 to 4 feet with another 6-8 ins coming sunday..... oh joy!

Welcome to the site...

Syclone 02-18-2010 06:31 PM

Howdy,
I live just a bit further down I29 in Sioux Falls. In fact, I just left Fargo about 4 hours ago (I'm up there for work quite a bit for the next year or so).
When (if) it gets warmer I plan on bringing up the 'Hawk for a week or two.

welcome....i've been a member on this site for 3 or 4 months. got my hawk 6 years ago. wished i would have known about this site then. probably would have saved me $$$ from knowing solutions for the notorious cct problem. you will for sure benefit from the overwhelming knowledge in here. ...like the jaradine highmounts too!!

Nice, now you can ride the tires off it without worry!

nekkid 02-19-2010 04:21 AM

You now own the best "most-bang-for-the-buck" bike in the world. Welcome to the fold.

nath981 02-19-2010 01:26 PM

welcome aboard! it would be interesting if you knew the previous owner. He may have been a member of this forum and you could learn some history of your new bike if he gave you his forum name. We need bike-fax or something other than tear everything apart to find out what has and hasn't been done.:D

I just looked at my cct and it was gray but longer than the red 1 u showed in ur pic? ar they oem?

Yep, long gray thing is OEM.

offroad_rider2008 02-19-2010 05:47 PM

k, better get to lookin for new 1 then, thanks lazn

nath981 02-19-2010 06:42 PM

or, the previous owner could have taken it to a honda dealer and had the CCTs replaced recently. That's why it would be nice to get the history if possible.

RequestTheOverhead 02-20-2010 08:55 AM

Getting a history would be nice... but I don't think it will happen. All I know is the bike was owned by someone in Wisconsin and then sold it to someone is Minneapolis, who sold it to me. It did have a little cosmetic damage (looks like the OP laid it down on the right side going pretty slow), but mechanically it's sound (i guess it is a honda ;)). It looks like the OP knew what he/she was doing cause the only thing it will need in the near future is new fork seals, which I'll probably just end up rebuilding the whole front end anyway. I was relieved to see a APE Manuel CCT though. Do I have to do any adjusting on that thing at all, or is it pretty much a set it and forget it?

Stevebis1 02-20-2010 09:11 AM

Haven't put mine in yet but as I understand it they should be adjusted periodically. For most of us that is probably every spring.

Also Welcome!

nath981 02-20-2010 09:31 AM

copy on the relief. Adjustment: simply loosen lock nut while holding the bolt steady. If there is play(finger tighten bolt, then just put the wrench on it but don't turn it, just make sure it is touching. You can back it off and on to feel that it is touching. Snug the lock nut while holding the bolt. Front and rear the same. You can run the engine and listen for the explosion. Kiddin:D
