2 smoke project...

Figured I'd start a new post for this since I'm getting ready to start putting it back together. I'd like to say it's a build thread, but I wouldn't want to even begin to compare it to conandp's build. I guess this is more of an assembly, since I have about as much talent as he does in one of his toes. You may remember this, I bought in Nov. for $700.

Found some holes in the pistons, so ended up totally disassembling it.
http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/n.../IMG_7759s.jpg
bought some parts, and had the frame and swingarm powdercoated.

Believe it or not, I know where most of this goes.... ;)

I'm almost ready to start reassembly, hope to be riding it by the summer.

Looks good so far. I can't wait to se the finished bike.

Awesome. Nice to see it again. Looked pretty nice to begin with, looking forward to seeing you finish it. You seem to be on the right path.

I'm going to go the cafe route, more like a half cafe I guess. For now, I'll do what I can to get it on the road with what I've got, pretty much everything, and use the stock seat for now, unless I find something I like before I'm done. I picked up a set of adjustable clubmans, the RD disc front end, K&N with Y boot, new coils, Dyna ignition,
and 520 conversion. Tires and some other odds and ends are on the way. I also bought a 6 speed, I knew if I didn't do it while it's apart I'd regret it later. Surprisingly, that $95.
media blaster from Harbor freight works pretty good, def. saved some time with alot of stuff. Probably order some pipes this week.

Man, I hate Yamaha RD's. Back in the mid 70's they used to kick sand in my face all the time when I was racing my Kawwie 350 triple. Must have been the extra-flexi swing arm pivots I had.

Making some progress, should have titled this "How to rebuild a bike 10 minutes at a time". Bought a newer battery, so I had to make a small riser to be able to use the strap. Also made a lip on it to hold the batt. from sliding forward.
http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/n.../IMG_7924s.jpg
Also picked up a new R/R, and mounted it on the front of the battery tray.
http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/n.../IMG_7934s.jpg
Realized I needed new triples for the RD front end. had to make a bracket to use the original gauges and ignition.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/n.../IMG_7930s.jpg
Here it is bolted up with the gauges just sitting in the holes.

here is the big picture.

Had to make some mods to use the R5 steering damper with the RD triples, those pics are on the phone I'll get them later. Almost looking like a bike now, probably get the tires put on next week.

I don't know who you were trying to kid my friend... this is a "build" nicely done so far. I am totally enjoying what you have so far. One ten minute project at a time will seem slow but all at once things will be done. It seems that way to me as I work, half done bits all over the bike then all the sudden momentum pics up and you stand back and say "wow." So keep us posted we enjoy this stuff to the core.

**UPDATE**
*Some progress has been made, other things took over for a while. I sent the crank to SCR to be checked, ordered some spec 2 classics, bought a seat cover and blinkers. I wasn't sure what direction I wanted to go with the seat, but I like the look of it. Once I get the crank back, it's finally time to start reassembling it. My goal is to be riding it this year, and I think it might actually happen. Here's a couple of pics, please excuse the sloppy look of the seat cover it's just sitting on there, no pan or anything (that's being cleaned up). I can almost smell it...

Yeah, once I saw those I had to get them, very good design. Actually I had just tightened them up before the pics, the front master cyl. (stock Hawk btw) is spun up some so I could get to the bolt, it will sit level normally.

It does look really good and I had forgotten how much offset those triples had......

I love it so far. Great job!

Baby steps...painted the rear turns the other day, after seeing the pics I realize how off the left looks, I'll have to give the mount a little tweak or it's going to drive me nuts. Engine going together in a while, pics to come.: before

After:

Also painted the heads, one came out good, the other like ass. I'll redo it this weekend.

Funny thing those rear reflectors are actually red too, I guess the flash makes them orange.

Well, after a year and a half, some snags, and way more cash than I ever planned to spend on it, IT RUNS!!! To my amazement, it started on the 2nd kick!!! Had it running for a few minutes, but that's all I could take since it's still downstairs (the Spec II's sound sweet BTW) even with 2 fans going it was pretty smelly. Next project, getting it out of the basement and up the bulkhead stairs. Still have some odds and ends to get together, but here it is...
