12V Socket
Last week I installed a 12v cig socket to power a phone or what ever else. Tried to make blend in and keep with the stock look.
(didn't realize how much polishing compound I got all over) https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sup...e04780eb66.jpg |
Nicely done, snuggled in there well.
Nice bracket work as well.... clean, functional and looks OEM |
I think I need this!

well done for sure

If the latter, skip the 12v receptacle and install a USB port. Everything I power on the bike us USB so it works best for me, your needs may be different. |

Do you run accessories that use a standard 12v socket? Or are you using a socket adapter to run USB stuff?

My thought for 12V was due to a GPS. With these new smart phone thingies I guess I will reconsider!
I did three Garmin Montana mounts and wiring jobs in last two months... the AMPS mount is best, but the cable it comes with has an audio cable attacked and three serial data wires as well...None of my guys need that so I cut them off and extend the cable to the FZ1 fuse box. The GPS also has a D shaped USB port, but that connection is not weather resistant..and the AMPS mount one is |

I considered a USB only (dual) port. I decided that the cig socket gave me more flexibility, at the expense of another connection/gadget. I ran wire heavy enough to power what ever I wanted (stator output be damned). Picked up a plug that has a dedicated lightening cord (Apple) and a USB port. Should be covered.
I do a standard install for my folks, Opitma SAE port mounted near the battery that can power high amp stuff and also be used to plug in a battery maintainer. Then a Blue sea systems dual USB port up at the dash / bars area. |
