Squeaky Hawk

I've got a 98 hawk and when its running it sounds like there is a squeak through the engine. When I rev it, it gets louder and faster.... any ideas? Sounds like a Jetsons Car.....

If its a chirp like a bird, its likely an air leak around the carb boot. Otherwise, you need to listen through a length of fuel line to isolate it to a part of the engine. No one can really diagnose it without more information.

I have a 98 as well that has the same "jetsons car" sound in the engine. sounds like it comes from the front, but it is hard to tell. My last bike was a 600rr and it obviously sounded completly different with no "squeek- high pitched chirp". Do all Hawks make this sound? I thought it might be a characteristic of a twin, but not sure. I just got it from the original owner with 13,000 on it. Anyone with any help would be fantastic- the noise stinks.

Mine does it too. I pulled it all apart and still cant figure it out!

... wtf it's cam chain whine. It's best related to the sound of a supercharger whine. Completely normal.

iscoot 11-13-2006 12:23 AM

if you switch to aftermarket slip-ons, you'll never hear it again! or anything
else for that fact.

EngineNoO9 11-13-2006 12:34 AM

i have erion pipes and the whine is still pretty loud. At speed though yeah I don't hear it

iscoot 11-13-2006 06:48 AM

i do think that my '98 had it more pronounced than my '99 does. thinking it could be the headers pinging? sounds like video game, right?

omniouslink 11-13-2006 06:44 PM

Yeah I have 2 bros. racing pipes and its loud but I still hear the wine. I have a feeling its just a normal thing. I tryed and tryed to find it but I gave up. I've put about 8k on the bike. Its not getting worse so....

+1

"Jetsons Car" is exactly how I describe it as well. I've asked about it with several different very reputable mechs and dealerships and they all say it's totally normal, and not possible to eliminate.

That is not too far from the truth.

I was told that the wine was from the carbs sucking air in.

I was going to ask this same question. But I can see I'm not the only one with chirping birds in my bike. Now I don't have to worry.

Whining noise

I once tightened my APE CCT's too tight and it made a little noise that inceased with RPM-once I loosened them a little the noise went away, my idle speed went up, the bike was easier to start, my bald spot went away and beer prices fell.

happytrack44 08-02-2007 06:15 PM

Man, I think it sounds cool, sort of like a dry clutch, noisy but cool!

haknslash 08-17-2008 06:17 PM

I've noticed lately that my hawk has a squeak to it but it doesn't seem like the same you guys are describing. Mine seems to only happen at low rpms and speed and goes away as I climb past 4000 rpm or so. I'd almost say it seems like its coming from the front wheel or steering head. I've tried to replicate the squeaking sound in my garage puching on the forks, turning the forks and leaning the bike at an angle and then pushing again and I still can't replicate the sound. Any ideas before I go ripping into the front wheel asy for possibly nothing?

Just a guess... But did you check the wheel bearings?

If your reply was for me, wouldn't they do it all the time not just at a certain RPM range?
