Motor/Frame Locking Nuts Removal Tools
If you've ever tried to find the Honda tools specified in the manual:
07VMA-MBB0100 07VMA-MBB0200 Needed to remove the castle head locking nuts on the frame you probably didn't find them at Ron Ayers or anywhere else, so here's a link to an affordable solution: http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_101...2_00934299000P I plan to get a set soon and I report back how well they worked... |
I ordered mine from the local dealership. They weren't very expensive.
I don't think those Craftsman drivers will work, unless you can mill out the center section. |

The Local Dealer had to research the part numbers cuz both have been superseded...he didn't give me the new numbers but the prices for the 2 parts are $105.25 & $128.99 each...

The craftsman slotted drivers wont work:(
looks like I'll be cutting down a couple of 12pt sockets so I may have to buy a plasma torch! |
Why?
I just used an angle grinder, some patience and a file... Took me 2-3 hours to make a complete set for all the castle nuts on the VTR, including the one for the steering stem... It took me about 3 years however to get pissed off enough to start doing it... But that's an entirely different matter... |

Why a special steering stem one? A 12 point 1 11/16" socket works perfectly.

Well on top of the top triple there is a normal one, yes... But underneath that you usually find a nut which is locked with a locking tab... A thin nut, a shim with tabs and a lower nut holding the stem to the headstock... And you can't use a normal socket as the steering stem is a bit to long for that... Now I'm fairly sure they used this setup on the Superhawks as well... At least they did in the pictures in the service manual...
And if you want to torque that to the specified torque when installing a taper bearing, a chisel is a bit imprecise... |

Well... I had my taper bearing go crunchy after only two seasons, so I guess I had it either entirely to tight or too loose... So I swapped the bearings again and made that socket to get it right...
Like I said... Small amount of work, and it makes things a whole lot easier, without paying the ridiculous prices Honda wants for the "special" tools... |
The VTR steering stem (or at least the 929 triple on mine) is short enough to torque properly with a 1 11/16" 12pt socket. My VTX, on the otherhand, is too long. I plan on dremeling out my socket so I can use it on the VTX too though. It's got just enough material to still use after dishing it out 1/2" or so.
|
With an unusually long socket possibly... Mine wasn't long enough by far... But I just cut up one socket to get the bottom part and welded it to another one for the top part... Like I said, easy...

The part no. on my "special tool" is 07HMA-MR70200. It's double headed so it can be used on two sizes of castle nuts. I checked the picture in the shop manual which shows the tool being used to remove the lock nut on the rearmost hanger bolt. The smaller diameter is the one being used. Its OD is 32 mm., its ID is 24 mm. and each of the 4 pegs on it is 6 mm. wide. The OD of the tool should match the OD of the lock nut. Please check before you buy.

Made my own caster nut/frame tools since paying over $70 each for them boarders on insanity!
Using a 4" grinder it was actually easy and took less than an hour to make both. For the 22mm I used an old 12-pt 7/8" socket and for the 20mm I used a 12-pt 3/4" socket. |
the tool that is used to remove the clutch nut on an XR200R fits the frame lock nut. I will look it up, I think I got mine from motion pro cheap.
Motionpro 20mm $9.23: http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/partno/08-0385/ http://www.motionpro.com/images/items/08-0385.jpg Honda 07716-0020100 combo 20mm / 24mm combo $30.62 at servicehonda http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/x...g/DSC03833.jpg |
