Carb jetting?

Hey, gang! I’m a proud new owner of a ‘98 Superhawk…. Absolutely love it! Don’t know the history of it, but there have been a few modifications done to it. Dual exhaust was eliminated and merged into a single. Seems to be alright, but I’m wondering if there may be some carb re-jetting done to correct what may have been caused by the exhaust mod..? Any easy way to determine…? Thanks in advance, Jeff

Two into one is usually problematic in regards to tuning. Some that have done it say the bike runs fine. Some that are very knowledgeable, say don't do it. The engine is very sensitive to carb and exhaust mods.
Just for interest sake, what year is on the VIN sticker? I see things that don't add up to a '98.
Oh yeah, welcome to the forum.

I see one thing that doesn't add up to a '98, but I'm on vacation, so I'm not working very hard.

What's up with that kickstand?

And, welcome.

UGh! Yeah, sorry about that kickstand..... The previous owner lowered the bike as low as possible, and then cut the original stand way down..... They had replaced the factory shock with a shock that was about 2" shorter... I've since replaced it with a factory shock and raised back to factory height. I modified the kickstand accordingly, but this picture is prior to that..... 😩

Hey, Xeris! The vin tag with the year is no longer on the bike (at least everywhere I've looked). The title for the bike was clean and clear, and was listed as a 1998 VTR 1000. Appears to have eBay plastics with Firestorm decals...?

That alternator cover is off a 2001+ bike. Is the clutch cover the same color or is it black?

Don't know what else xeris is seeing. Again, vacation.

Chubbydaddy99 May 18, 2024 11:22 PM

Oh, boy..... So the clutch cover was similar, but I think a bit lighter color? I actually painted the clutch cover over the winter when I had it off to replace the water pump seals...... A buddy of mine mentioned there was some numbers written on the case that looked like markings from a salvage/wrecking yard...? Dang, I really don't know for sure what's original or not... Hey, enjoy your vacation, don't let my questions interfere with your time away..... But thanks for all the help.... 👍

as far as the exhaust goes, they can be a nightmare to setup with jetting,, no matter how it feels a dyno will tell the truth that you may gain a little at the bottom end but loose out everywhere else.. with dyno time and jetting you may be lucky to get gains but only back to what it started with using twin pipes, yamamoto made a 2 into 1 and from what iv seen its the only system of that type that worked well.

Thanks fabiostar for the reply. I appreciate the input. It looks like I may be better off going back to a factory two pipe setup, maybe with some upgraded slip-ons..... Being new at this, I'm not skilled enough to do too much legwork with the testing, etc.... but I know I want it to be able to run at it's optimum range, and perform it's best.....
