Has anyone on here done this? Results?

mikstr 06-27-2007 10:15 AM

I did, seems to work as claimed on the site.

StoneJrW 06-28-2007 08:07 AM

Cool. Never heard of it though. Wonder if anyone else has done it? I'll try it and post my take on it.

For the cost of trying it you really can't go wrong.....

It' basically converts the stock air filter to the same shape as the K&N drop in filter. The K&N drop in filter does not have that "flap/ridge" and seems to work fine.

Yea I was about to say, my K&N dosen't have the ridge. Oh well, I'm at 180-185 mains, 45 pilot, 4 on the needles, and K&N. Gonna ride it to work, see haow it goes.

My findings differ. Years ago I dropping in your standard off the shelf K&N and it resulted in a predictable hole in the power band when you rolled gradually through the 3500-4000 rpm range. I shelved the K&N for years and returned to the OEM Honda paper filter. Seeing my investment sitting there doing nothing year after year while I bought expensive Honda filters gave me the idea to do this:

Since then, my power band behaves itself, and I have a 1000000 mile filter again.

What exactly does the perf plate over the filter do?

I scavenged that screen from the stock Honda a/f. They have it fixed to the clean side of the filter so it isn't intended for added filtering. I figure it is needed to slow down and diffuse the air as it enters the lower side of the airbox, in effect balancing the air pressure before entering the carbs. No hot spots means no super-charged effect for one cylinder while the other starves.

My intent was to use a relatively useless K&N, mimicking the airflow properties of the OEM a/f while retaining the lifetime properties if the K&N. With this mod I found that middleground.

btw... shameless plug here... I'm going to part it out and sell it separately when I sell my VTR later this summer.
