Ok, so I bought my hawk (a 2000) with 14K miles on it about a month ago. I have put 1000 miles on it since then. When I bought it, the sprocket was new, all teeth were there. I know this because I inspected it while oiling the chain. So, after 1000 miles, take a look at this thing! (see attached pic).

Now the prev. owner said they recently put a new sprocket on there, it is an RK vortex brand, I believe built out of aluminum. The point is, they are lighter, but damn, I am sticking to steel from now on.

Out of 41 teeth, I think about 9 are there! Note also, these were clean "breaks" not worn down.

Anyway, what a mess, went in for a new tire and then all this crap. But I guess better finding out in the shop than out on a road.

I would guess that a new sprocket was put on with the original and very stretched chain. Sprocket pitch and chain pitch don't match. Replace them as a set and aluminum works fine. You may get two sprocket lifes out of one chain if you replace it early enough.

Yeah I think you are right, I am pretty sure the front sprocket is stock still.


BTW, does any one know the stock tooth configuration or ratio?


Na, no burn outs, only small wheelies every once in a while.

Also, what is the factory chain, a 520 or 530?

It's 530 x 16-41.. and even a steel sprocket will die a quick death if you wrap it with a worn out chain.

I'll have to get pics of my rear sprocket I managed to kill that way. Not nearly as bad as that monstrosity, but it did go from fine to fecked in 1 week. Checked it before riding over to WV to watch racing at Summit Point on a Sunday, on Friday I pull in at work and it's not feeling quite right. The chain had about 18k on it, so it was due. Chain slack was ok on Sunday. Had about 1 1/2 inches yanked in it by Friday. When they go, they really go!

HA! That's a Vortex for ya'! Nah, really I think the wrong size sprocket was on there for the chain you have. The PO obviously had no idea what he was doing when he replaced it.

Go for Afam sprockets. Even in aluminum, they are the best. IMO, of course. :)
