Worth the time?
 

Hello all, I am looking to buy a Superhawk. I am on a limited budget so I have been looking for a project bike and I found this today:

98 SUPERHAWK 1000CC


Is there value here, worth the time? What specifically should I ask the owner when I speak with him?

A bike with 100,000 miles and major engine work needed... no. It has a value of about $100.

Why did you he have OEM CCts that led to the failure

If you can wield spanners and can find a new (secondhand) front head - transplant that on, bung some manuals in. But as autoteach suggests there could be potentially a lot more work hidden in the non-runner. If you have your heart really set on it, get as much info, documentation & receipts from the owner so you have fuller knowledge on what your letting yourself in for and still haggle him down. At worst you might be able to part it for bits if it becomes uneconomic to repair

I'd want more details about the rest of the bike. And pictures. Assume the engine is trashed, and negotiate from there. You might be able to pick up a full replacement engine for not too much $$$. If you can handle the work, swapping the engine out would be easier (and cheaper) than trying to fix the broke engine.

I think it's worth more than $100. I'd offer him $500 if everything else looks ok (other than the engine).

If nothing else, I'd give him 500 to part it out. Assuming the plastics are reasonable, there are a number of other items that would bring some cash. If someone out west buys this for parts, I get dibs on the engine case covers. :)

Hmm, varied opinions but very informative. Called dude, he is standing firm at $600, sayz he will just fix it otherwide....

if it was closer, I'd buy it for parts. Looks like jardine pipes. that assumes it's not been wrecked.

If you're going to get it to build, like mentioned above, you should consider just bolting in a replacement engine.
