I guess Honda wanted to recycle the name from the old SuperHawk 305 from the 70's.

Here's an interesting quote from the July '97 issue of Cycle World magazine, the issue in which the then new SuperHawk won their sweet 16 open class sportbike shootout.
"Lastly, the VTR is, quite literally, the bike we here at CW have been asking for. In fact, in our July 1992 issue, we commissioned an artist's conception of a Honda V-Twin sportbike called the "Super Hawk, " and asked readers if they would like to see it produced. The response? A resounding "Yes!" and we forwarded the bags of mail we received directly to Honda. So, we'd like to think that Cycle World and its readers had a hand in bringing the VTR to market."
I thought/read the original concept was to make a "super" or newer version if you will of a Honda 650 Hawk GT. With the name "superhawk" being used much earlier by Honda I guess it's safe to say it came first before "firestorm." I know they also call CBR's "fireblades" across the pond, YZF1000's and 600's "Thunderaces" and "Thundercats" too.

We associate carniverous birds with power and competence. It's a marketing image. No, I'm not kidding.
