A friend put a crazy thought in my head.

Single shortened exhaust cannister, set low on the right side.

I've read on here, that duals were mainly run to help keep the noise down, and that the bike should run fine on a single exhaust, since the exhaust comes down to a single pipe before going back up to duals.

Has anyone done anything similar to this?

There was a thread somewhere where a new member bought a bike with such an exhaust... Search around...

There are a few reasons why not though...

One, it will need re-jet, in this case rather extensively with new needles and most likely new mains aswell... and unless you are experienced it will need to go on a bench and be tuned by a pro... That cost more than as few $$$

Two, a single can (at around stock positon) tends to be loud, and it also tends to make the noise more highpitched and annoying... A short (wide?) can positioned like the cans on newer bikes will be the same and probably worse as you also remove a couple of bends in the pipes, plus the stock ones like that have completely different inside baffles...

Try removing the left can and running the bike with one missing... Since the left can gets less throughput on a stock setup, that's pretty close to the sound you will get... Then decide...

My problem is, my heels hit the midpipes. I don't care for the look of stock pipes.

Maybe, I'll go with shortened Jardine cans, and run them down near the stock location.

That was the thread I was thinking of, yes...

Springbubba sent me that a month ago.. its now on my bike, sounds great.. I havent rejetted my bike yet (seems to running good enough).. I love the way it opens up the rear end, and now i can lock my helmit easier..

If you have the skills to make a 2-1 then I think you should do it.. It looks and sounds alot better and it frees up a ton of room!!

How loud is it?

I'm still considering it, already looking a jetting kit.

The stock exhaust already has the 2 into 1 on the right side. We'd just cut it, bend a short piece of pipe, and attach a hanger to the muffler supported somewhere around the rearset.

My thoughts are, if I move it down low, it changes the center of gravity a little, opens up the rear (even more so when I finally get the undertail), and will be sorta unique.

Springbubba thought it was very loud, and he has D&D pipes now (said to be the loudest pipes).. but i think it is perfect.. still alot quiter than all those Harleys w/ strait pipes..
So i still say go for it.. it will sound good and you'll have a custom exahust.. If u dont like it you can alway trade it to someone for their stock header and use your old pipes..
