Want to buy a vtr 1000, need some info...

Hello,

I have owned my 94 ZX7 for 14 years and its time to move on. I have always liked the VTR 1000 and I have always wanted to own a V-Twin. I need more comfort as well. I was wondering if somebody can give me a quick run down of the differences from 1998-2005. I understand that at some point they updated the bike with a larger fuel tank and higher bars. What model year should I be looking for?

Thanks!

M

Greetings

Depends where you are, as the US Superhawk and rest of the world Firestorm had slightly different upgrades in 2001.

Firestorm changes :

Superhawk didn't get the upgraded tank and IIRC neither the bars.

Hi
Thanks for the reply. I am in Montreal, Canada.

Salut Mudkicker

I am located in Almonte, Ont, just west of Ottawa.

I have a '99 Firestorm - black, Ohlins, Racetech, Sargent, APE, V&H, Helibars, and more for sale.

Let me know if you are interested and I'll send some pics and the spam.

Cheers!

Geoff

I'm in Montreal too, there aren't too many here, it's nice to have something a little different :-)

What the hell, this has become an ''I'm in MTL thread''. Welcome Mud, once you get your new ride, let's all get together and drive towards St-Sauveur, and grab the 327 and then the 364, they both have fresh asphalt, and nice twisties....Yeh baby.

Mud, I guess your changing your ZX7 since your tired of paying for the crazy plate prices ?;)

As a matter of fact, 92-95 ZX7's pay the regular plate fees. It must be a glitch. I am tired of the aggressive race posture. Im getting too old for it.
I have done the 327 and 364 many times...it sounds like a plan.

Im looking to buy the Firestorm that came with the bigger tank and higher bars. It would seem that 2001 - 2005 are this way, can you confirm this?
Also, I see some Superhawks for sale in Quebec, I thought Superhawk was only in the US.

The larger tank was only available in Europe.

Best way to make certain is check to see if the 19L's fuel tap is frame mounted as opposed to the 16L tank's which on the base of the tank.

comedo - Location: Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Honda Canada never stocked the 19 l. tank as far as I know.

comedo 09-20-2012 05:27 PM

Firestorms were called Superhawks in 2005 which was the last year that they were sold in Canada.

Mudkicker 09-20-2012 07:03 PM

OK, so Canada never got the bigger tank. How about the raised bars?

Also, what kind of mileage can I expect to get from the 16L tank? I currently get 250KM to the tank on the ZX.

thanks

About 160-180km and depends how hard you use your throttle:D
Over in oz we got the euro storms, bars slightly higher
If you want to go higher, maybe try apex bars a few of us have them
and their great

I got about 180km before the RLOD came on. 210 and you're walking.

I put HeliBars on mine - they raise your hands up and back about 1.5 inches.

If you don't beat the throttle too much, you should get 200-210km, and this is with more highway then town, or back roads. Comes down real fast if you stop/go in town. I do remeber once having done alot of highway, and made it to about 230-240km on one tank. That was a real surprise to me, I thought my gauge was broken.;)

200 miles with the 25L tank

Actually, that doesn't give you any usefull information what-so-ever, since all 2001-> bikes have the petcock mounted on the frame, regardless of the size of the tank... ;)

Mudkicker 09-22-2012 05:38 AM

So it's 100% certain that Canadian Firestorms never got the 19L tank?

Wicky - what tank dod you use? Very nice bike!!!!

Wicky 09-22-2012 06:21 AM

That seems to be the consensus.

Not mine - It's a modded tank that the guy got from ebay.

I'm fine with my 16L tank - 80 miles on the thrash, and seen 120 miles long distance cruising. If I want more I just carry a 5L fuel can.

Tweety, I assume you mean this for your area of the world?

Ive seen 2002 and on VTRs here with the same tank mounted petcock.
And the parts sites show only ONE fuel tank mounted petcock for all years.. but again that is here in the US.... perhaps other export areas got not only the 19l tank, but a frame mounted petcock?

Or the 2002 bike I worked on had hold over parts on?

Or something.:(

Well... I was actually going on the US version of the service manual, that clearly shows the newer generation having a frame mounted petcock, the same as the EU version with the larger tank... So I guess the manual is then in error... It wouldn't be the first...

Renderw 09-23-2012 05:29 PM

my pet cock is on the tank.. it's a 2001.. has the fuel guage on the dash..
new bike to me.. yet to fill it so I can't say for sure how big the tank is.. (still trying to get it running)
Manual says:
Fuel tank capacity 16.0 ~ (4.23 US-.Ral ,3.52 Im~al)

There are two of them in the classified section that are a few hours drive from Montreal (CT and NY). You won't find any in that kind of condition at those prices up here (I was searching all spring/summer until I found mine).
