VTR1000 stunt bike for $2500?
I've been riding a yzf600r for 5k miles and it just took a shit on me and broke down. This would be my second motorcycle. I sold the yzf600r for $1800 and I'm looking to buy some thing else. I found this bike on craigslist and was wondering if it was a good deal. I'm giving him $1800 + a gaming PC worth about $750.
My main concern is... Is a bike that was used for stunting a bad bike to buy? He txted me and told me he bought a new clutch and new clutch plates but he doesn't think he "Bled it" right. He said air got into the lines. Is this even possible? Didn't think it was possible to bleed a clutch line lol. Isn't it just a cable? Any way he told me he thinks he fixed it but isn't 100% sure. He said he's going to make sure it is working correctly before selling it to me. Sounds pretty weird. 2005 Honda SuperHawk 996 - VTR1000 Stunt bike |
Yes we have hydraulic clutch lines from the lever to the slave cylinder, and yes it's highly likely that air could have gotten in there, and no I would never buy a bike that has been stunted upon, and vtr's are generally owned by mature, ahem, "riders of a certain nature" who will, unfortunately, not be much help towards anyone interested in stunting their poor Hawk. At least that's what I'm predicting based on a similar post from about two weeks ago...
Anyway, Superhawks CAN be stunted, but there are certainly better choices with stronger steering heads, shorter wheelbases, better brakes and just overall better suited geometries for being a stunt bike. I'm gonna guess that depending on how much that bike was actually stunted, and the level of skill that rider actually possessed (could he land wheelies well? Was he dropping it every other attempted stunt?) that that bike is gonna have many more problems than air in the clutch line... Good luck. |
That bike is for sale locally to me.. I've looked at that ad a bunch of times and I never gave a second thought to purchasing it btw...
Okay, that's a lie... I thought about buying it for the microns, carbs, and the wheels, maybe, and his crash cage. The cans not being beat to shit MIGHT mean he was a good stunter and left it in the best shape a stunted bike can be in, but still... |
Ok thanks for the info.

If he was willing to take $1600 and no trade, I would say maybe you could take the chance.
|
Just seemed kind of tempting with under 10k miles and it being a 2005. Can't really find a good bike for under $2200.

I'd take a high mileage, commuted on Hawk over a low mileage stunted one any day. Three months ago, there was a black 98 Hawk on Tampa craigslist for $1300... I'm not saying it's definitely a bad deal, and theres a few of us here locally in the bay area who can help you out if you buy it. I'm just saying me personally, I shy away from that kind of deal. But at the end of the day, you're right. It fits your budget and suits your needs, then go for it. This forum is the first step into resurrecting that thing back to health if it's indeed hurt from being thrashed. Honestly the steering head area and frame are my biggest concern.
|
And if it spent a lot of time in the 12 o'clock position and still has stock CCT's, I'd be afraid of the front cylinder going boom. Hard to tell on my phone, but it looks like that's not a stock front brake MC either, could have upgraded bits there...

Any one willing to go check it out with me some time this weekend? I'll throw $50 your way! :)

I would pass unless you want to stunt it.The add says it would be a great first bike...thats alot to handle if someone is buying thier first bike.
|
Pass on the stunt bike, it just puts way to much stress on the wrong parts of any bike.

|
i back everything supermarto said about that stunt bike, all i want is the microns,i really thought about asking him lol

Only buy a stunt bike if you intend to use it as a stunt bike.... at a very low price.
|
yeah new clutch at 10K that thing looks like a POS... You can get a lot nicer hawk for the money I only payed $2600.00 for my 2002 with 2500 miles on her... there are deals to be had just be patient
|
Yep a lot better ones for the money out there. Just my opinion of course but I am asking 2700 for mine and in my opinion the comparison to that bike is miles off.
|
i can say,i have seen this bike in person and the local bike nights, and is not worth it at all, only the cans, crash bar and a couple of things are good on the bike.
would need new subframe, gas tank, forks re-done,wind screen,im sure a good clean and tune, and who knows what else. i would never bu it over 900. there is some local in the area for sale.one in lakeland and orlando. |
Well im amazed that no one has mentioned this either, but a hawk isnt a well suited stunt bikes no only because of weak external parts.
hawks riden on the rear wheel for long periods of time (like most stunt bikes are) have a tendency of starving the front cylinder for oil, this can cause no problems at all because proper precautions are taken ( I.E. overfilling the crank case with oil) to help this issue. but if that wasnt done and im not even sure if that would work on a hawk like it does on I4's then you could have cylinder lube issues causing anything from ring/ piston/ crank/cam/ valve/ cct/ and or bearing failor down the road. just figured i would throw in my 2 cents. no saying wheelies are bad but just that stunting a hawk isnt the best idea. |
Just to be clear, I wasn't intending to buy this bike as a stunt bike. I was intending to buy this bike as a reliable way I can get to work and some times ride with my friends.
But as you guys suggested, I will pass on this one. |

But as you guys suggested, I will pass on this one. there are plenty of bikes in good condition you can find on C.L. i picked my 01 hawk up for $2300 with 14 on the clock in Orlando. you just have to be paitient. best of luck with your seach. |
ChrisG.(sounds familar) Along with all the info the group has given...The consideration the bike being stunted, and being wheelie NON-stop.. Has effects on the oiling of most of the engine.. The tranny stays in oil. But cylinders, etc. usually strave for oil.
