Used Superhawk price

I am looking at a used Superhawk at a dealership in the Minneapolis area. It's a 1998 with 8100 miles on it, Micron high mount pipes, a stage one jet kit and dunlop sport max tires with a season or two left on them. The bike looks new. They are asking $6000 for it. I'll most likely trade in my suzuki marauder, 2000 model with 9400 miles on it. I am looking for more of a sport bike (by my standards, not the bike magazines) that I can live with as an everyday bike. I can't test ride until the snow melts but when I sat on it it felt great.
Any opinions or advice anyone can give me would be great.

Emwyn,

It's just my opinion, but the price seems a little high. You can pick up a brand new one or leftover (without mods of course) in that same basic price range... being that a '98 is technically 7 years old, you might want to negotiate the price.

I'd check prices on EBAY as well... that should give you a good idea of what to pay and a baseline for your negotiation, even though you'll pay more typically from a dealer than a private party anyway.

BTW... I bought my '98 (12K) with a Yoshi exhaust, Corbin seat, and a 1 small coin size scuffs on it a little over a year ago from a Yamaha dealer... paid 4500 and felt I paid too much after seeing what private parties have been asking for the same bike. But I loved it... and still do.

I'd say it is way high. I bought my 1998 in October with 11,000 miles, two brothers full system, rejet, braided lines, mirror extensions, and an extra set of side fairings, and brake pads for $2900. That is below market, but I also went and looked at one with 14,000 miles, yosh pipes, full fairing, and a corbin seat at the same time for $3000. I ended up going with the one I chose because the guy was on top of the maintainance a bit more. I wouldn't spend much more than $3500 in the fall or winter for a 1998 unless it is really cherry. Add $500-750 in the spring as the season starts.

Judging from what I've seen at http://www.cycletrader.com , that price is more than a little steep. It sounds like they are expecting you to pay a premium rate for the VTR and then foot the bill for the jet kit installation and the Micron slip-on exhaust. Good luck trying to get them to do the same for you on a trade-in . :)

According to Kelly Blue Book, MSRP for a '98 VTR1000F is $4750. Adding $130 for the slip-ons ($65 x 2) brings the fair market value of a '98 SuperHawk with slip-on exhaust to $4880. If you really like the bike in question, you might show-up with a Kelly Blue Book print-out in-hand and see if they are willing to sell you the VTR for $5000 all-in. (Average trade-in per Kelly Blue Book is $3270, so they would likely still be making a wad of cash on the deal.)

To access both Kelly Blue Book and NADA values, go to http://www.themotorcycleshopga.com/links.html and scroll down the "Links" page to the section "Market Values".

(By the way, the bike featured in the image at the header of the Web site is SuperChicken II, right after the WebCam racing cams and Ferrea light-weight valves were installed, and a week before it was stolen...She got a cameo role for the sake of posterity, I guess.) :)

I'm in mn also, I'm guessing it's at tousley? If that's the case there alway's high. There was one in the cycletrader in coon rapids with about the same miles and it was going for 4800, I'd check there first.

Great choice of bike, you won't be disappointed.

But the price on that 98 is way too high. that bike is worth around $4-$4.5k.

My 2002 now has 11k miles on it, never dropped, many extras, and I will be very lucky if I get anywhere around $5500 for it. (not that I will ever sell it, just saying.)

Thanks everybody for your replies. I will expand my search. I think at this point I'm liking the SH too much to look at other bikes. Just got booked on a movie, so in 6 to 8 weeks I'll have a bit more cash to throw at a SH when the right one comes around. Thanks again for the advice. (Glad I found this forum)

Emwyn,

Don't knoe if your still looking, but I was doing my daily scan through Ebay and notices this near Chicago... I know Minneapolis isn't extrodinarily far away... so maybe this will interest you. It's a brand spanking new 2002... I wouldn't doubt if it was in the 6K price range, maybe even less.
