Think'n about a SHawk

I'm going to look at what appears to be a nice 2003 w/ 14K miles. Bike looks as though it has been treated well. Is 14k long in the tooth for a SHawk? I have been riding for 40+ years but don't know much about the SHawk. Any advice? Thanks - Sal

Well all depends who you ask. Mine is at 80k and still going strong and I'm no where near the mileage record...... ;)

At 14k the engine is just broken in good.

If you take care of the 2 problem areas on a hawk, R/R and CCT's. Total cost would be 200 bucks. Then with proper maintenance and care you should never mile out a Hawks motor.

What type of riding do you do?

Around town - commuting on nice days. errands. saturday/sunday 2 hr fun rides. I am hard pressed to ride 1500 miles a year on the street as so much time is focused on racing enduros. I'm an expert offroad rider looking to explore a street bike that is more performance oriented.

What are R/R and CCT's?

Did a search on CCT's. No worries - I can do that. The KLR I had a similar issue. Thanks.

Found info on the R/R - regulator/rectifier.

I bought my first bike in 1981, a 1978 Honda CX500, modded for canyon racing, with 19,000 miles on it. I sold it 5 years later with over 72,000 miles on the odometer, having done nothing more than normal maintenance and brakes. My '05 VTR has over 43,000 super fun miles on it.

you will love this bike, its the best all around bike you will get.
as stated above, fix the 2 issues and keep up the maintence and you will be good to go.
do some little mods and upgrades and it will take you long way.
i got mine cheap and with 16xxx on the clock, mine needed some work because of the past po,but its been all worth it.
whats the price they are asking for it.

salgeek 10-09-2010 05:11 AM

Asking $3400.
2nd owner. Appears to be in immaculate condition - but I have not seen it.
I had been looking for a Hornet 919 - and ran across a comparison article and now I am leaning to the SHawk.

*Jaradine RT-One Slip On's
*Dyno-Jet Jet Kit
*K&N Air Filter
*HID Headlight
*LED Tailight
*Corbin Seat
*Steel Braided Brake Lines Front & Rear

What do you all think?

Tweety 10-09-2010 05:13 AM

Yep... And should be for a long time to come... But they aren't called "Stealerships" for nothing...

What color? Link to add? I'm not going to steal your deal (I'm in Sweden)... Just trying to see if I can identify the owner as a forum member as those mods are amongs the one's perfected on this forum...

Personally I dislike K&N and Dynojet kit's and would rip that out after 5 minutes, but that's personal preference mostly (some numbers to back it up) so that's no selling point for me... But overall condition is the decider...

salgeek 10-09-2010 05:45 AM

Didn't know whether links to an ad would bother the Admin. Hope not.
Thanks for the help

Tweety 10-09-2010 06:31 AM

Nope, not easily identified...

Ungh... That's a not a HID headlight... That's a HID drop in bulb... Read up on why, then replace it with a stock bulb is my advice... But the condition looks good... I'd say it's a good buy... Might push the price down a bit using the HID thing... That's not a upgrade performance wise, it's a definete downgrade...

Thats a good looking bike. I especialy like the blue accents on the rims gotta do that to mine. I use mine for the same things you said you were going to do. Fills all those niches nicely.

Wolverine 10-09-2010 07:47 AM

Jump on it before someone else does. You won't regret it, thats one great looking SH. Here is a comparable one on ebay. Starting bid 3900 from a dealer.

Welcome to the forum!!

speedkelly@aol.com 10-09-2010 08:49 AM

great deal

I've been looking for another superhawk for a while now. That's a great deal with all those mod's. He asking $3400. Go make him an offer. If you don't like the corbin seat or the pipe's they will sell easy on this site. Good looking hawk there, good luck.

saige 10-09-2010 09:12 AM

thats a nice hawk, price is good,i would work the price down some, but over all,its a good looking bike with good parts.i would go for it.

salgeek 10-09-2010 11:37 AM

Thank you all for the help. I'm anxious to see it.

nekkid 10-09-2010 12:00 PM

I hope the bike is in the great condition it looks to be. If you buy it and ride it, you'll love it. As a dirt rider for 40+ years, you'll recognize that the Hawk rides like an old Maico 400 square barrel. Tractable, gobs of torque. Twist the wrist and it pulls like a freight train. Enjoy it.
