steel vs aluminum sprockets

Okay fellows.....

looking to to a slight mod on the stretched hawk.......

My question is which is better for performance and durability, i notice that aluminum is lighter but is that better......i'm going for the 520 -1, +2.......i counted the links and is around 60....so do u times that to get the 120 links or what?:horse:

Steel..

Aluminum wears out faster, and you can lose more weight by dieting for a day.

inderocker 01-23-2009 03:45 PM

STEEL!
Aluminum is for soda cans!

i guess i need to :google: that......lol

but i felt like steel would be a better choice.................lmao aluminum is for cans ha ha ha

aluminum, its good enough for the frame. its good enough for the sprockets.
(cold hardened anodized aluminum lasts as long as steal. heck i even run them on my ATV's out in the dirt.
NOTE: dont buy the 19$ aluminum ebay sprockets.

Hawkrider 01-23-2009 06:19 PM

Supersprox has an aluminum carrier and a steel outer ring with teeth. It's held together with Ti rivets. Awesome shit. I've got one. They're only about $15 more than Al and last much longer....plus they look cool!

I've seen these and they are very cool. Lite weight but very durable steel teeth.

I'm happy with my Vortex aluminum. I know it won't last as long as steel but the price was right and it works. Have to keep up on the maintenance though or it will be shot in 2k miles like my friend's 929. He overtightened the chain and then tried to do wheelies. 20 miles later he was missing teeth.

chevy 01-27-2009 05:03 PM

every 2k don't wanna go that route.........

divingindaytona 01-27-2009 09:08 PM

My vortex alum sprocket lasted 4K it was shot. Steel for me from now on.

Hawkrider 01-31-2009 02:51 PM

My Vortex lasted 8k, and I have a Scottoiler! Complete crap and the worst money I ever spent. I hate to be harsh but at least I'm honest....

Well... Your frame isn't rotating at couple of thousand rpm's and it's not grinding on a metal chain either at those intervalls... So that comparasion is a bit crooked...

If you put steel parts against aluminium parts in any situation where rotating parts are involved the steel part grinds up the alu part... Happens every time, no way around it... lubing it doesn't change it much...

Steel vs steel... Alu vs alu... All other combinations is a good way to have a failure...

Did you get one in 520? I only found 530 on the site (for the Hawk), also noticed 43 tooth shows N/A.

1zeppfan 04-10-2009 08:28 AM

My Vortex lasted 18k. Had no problems with it. Just put another one on it.

Hawkrider 04-10-2009 08:36 AM

I still have stock ratio but in the 520 variety.

As far as longevity of the Vortex goes, I guess it's along the same lines as tires. Some guys can have a rear last 8k. Mine last 2k. YMMV, literally....

finepooch 04-10-2009 12:19 PM

aluminum sprokets make me laugh!

autoteach 04-10-2009 07:20 PM

oh yeah, Finepooch, they make my penis hurt!

I also noticed they are out of stock for the VTR which sucks cuz I'm ready to buy a set of both sprokets and chain.
