Does anyone have some shots of their hawks loaded up to the hilt?

I'm going camping and am going to be packing everything on the bike.

Right now it's stock with some low-mount aftermarket cans, so hopefully I can fit some soft side bags on there without issue. Then I'll pile some stuff up top and bungee across to the seat frame in front and rear of the side bags. The plastic undertail covers all of the seat frame, so I'm thinking I'd need to drill some holes in there to get a bungee hooks latched on. Then I can mask the rear plastic to keep that from scratching up.

The seat feels very flimsy, so I don't want to fugg that up.

I have a weekend camping trip coming up, which will be sort of a test-run for a week-long camping trip in Yosemite and Tahoe. And that trip just might just a test run for a cross-country trip.

I went to the local camping supply store, and they've got some nice compact stuff for backpackers that will be great for fitting on the bike. (Not cheap though!) Already bought some chairs and a LED lantern and smaller sleeping pad.

I have the same cortech tail pack and love it. But I didn't like how the bungee cords looked so I replaced them with some nylon cord and some buckles, works great!

Does that just strap around and under the seat or does it attach underneath somehow? Does the seat and bag come off as one piece?

I'm guessing I'll want a taller windscreen too if I'm going to be using a tankbag with much in it.

I need to figure something out for this summers cross country journey. It would be nice to have a Givi case that sat above the passenger seat so that you didn't have excess weight behind the rear axle.

the tail bag will work fine. If you do not have some sort of support for the saddle bags, your tail plastic will take a beating. Mine broke one of the lower tabs over 1000miles

That's good to know! I was going to go with saddle bags mostly cuz I just like the looks of them better. Hadn't considered the wear factor. ;)

on topic with carrying luggage on VTR - Cover with a towel or camping mat to protect the rear cowling from scratches - I use for touring Gearsack soft seat bag integrated with soft sports throw-over panniers.

These come with handy built in straps and hooks that hold everything securely to the seat base and on the passenger footpegs. With a bungees I've strapped on sleeping bag, foldup chair, tent, kettle etc. without a problem even at naughty speeds. Heavy compact stuff goes upfront in the clip on expandable baglux tankbag.

A tinted flip up screen allows high speed cruising without needing to hunch or duck out of airstream. And for travelling to Assen for GP or TT via Amsterdam there's plenty places left to stow holiday souvenirs in or around the bike - problem solved.

Never had a problem with bottom cowl tabs but I can see how they could snap subjected to loading stressing them. Possibly take out the fiddly placcy screws just so the cowl has a bit more give?

haha not the same, but in my defense, i used to use this tail+saddle bags combo on my hawk ALOT. the saddle bags arent on the RC because the exhaust doesnt mix with them very well...

I do, I have all the parts cut and ready and as I get orders I weld them up test fit them and send them off.

Mine with Nelson Riggs bags and Sargent tank bag. I did manage to put a couple scratches on the rear plastic. I'm thinking about making some support arms to help keep the bags off the plastic for this years trips.

This is the thread I've been waiting for. I'm supposed to go camping in the Smokies this spring -about 300 miles on my '03 with high-rise Jardines, and I have no clue how to load my SH with the right bags and not scratch up my paint.
Anyway, while I can't add to the photos, because I'm going to learn from them, I will add my extensive backpacking experience:
-If you're camping single with your bike, you must try a Hennessy Hammock. They're more comfortable than your bed at home, weigh less than 2lbs, take up 1/2 the space of the lightest ultralight tent and require no sleeping pad. -If I wasn't married, I'd rig one of these in my bedroom as a full-time bed.

are you guys saying that saddlebags rub the plastic and scratch it or actually cause structural damage from weight???

One of the lower tabs on mine was already broken when I got the bike, and I repaired and reinforced it with fiberglass.

They're pretty poorly attached, just held in place with plastic push nuts. Not meant to see any sort of force.

I would definitely try running an aluminum brace under the seat and over these to keep weight off them, or else hold the bags apart from underneath somehow.

At one point I was looking at a Suzuki Kat 750, which has a ton of exposed plastic. Found this website, where you actually can buy the clear plastic w/ adhesive and cut it to fit on the exposed part of your SH tail where you're gonna rout the soft bags straps. I'm facing the same problem with my new 03, as without the bags, I don't think I can take it to work. Check this out.

Mine rubbed the paint where the straps go across under the tail. the neoprene backing that came with my bags seem to do the trick, I had several good coats of wax on there as well. I did break one mounting tab on the tail because of the weight but I had them overloaded.

i broke a tab bungee-ing the backpack down. I didn't see that this happened until I got back. That ship has sailed...
