seized front brakes
 

Well this is weird. I just went to the garage to work on the electrical issue the vtr is having. And I had to drag the bike out of its corner as the front wheel is seized. I washed it the other week when I changed over to coolant. Wonder what's causing it.

Got it. Took a few light taps from a rubber mallet but its free. Surprised by how much rust is on the rotors. Anything I can put on them to keep them rust free through the winter?

Just push the brake pads away from the rotor, your first ride will derust them in the spring. (be sure to pump them close again before riding come spring though) Assuming the bike is stored in a dry location it will only be surface rust and not rot.

That's a direct result of you washing and then putting it away without being completely dry... Otherwise it doesn't happen... And like lazn said, that surface rust will go away in spring... I'd suggest pumping them in now, it's likely you forget it in spring and unless you diligently check all things before take off, it could be hairy...

thats what happened for sure then. damn thing. oh well atleast its resolved now :) thanks for the info. i took some brake cleaner to the rotors and wiped them down to get the rust off. i tell ya the bike is a real pig to drag off a sheet a plywood when the front wheel is locked up, haha.

on a positive note i may have fixed the brake light issue i was having :D

welcome to the wonderful world of iron rotors......

When I wash my bike (or my wife's), I dry it with towels, then blow with compressed air in all cracks, rotors, radiators, oil cooler, etc. Then I take it for a ride and get it up to speed (freeway is close by) to sling water off the chain and dry off the engine and brakes. Then do a touch up dry with microfiber when I get back home.
