RC-51 SP-2 swingarm & wheel selection?
 

With all the talk of the 900RR swingarm brace & brake bracket welded to our stock swingarm, it got me thinking again about doing the RC-51 SP-2 swingarm swap this winter. After seeing Tweety's write up, I have wanted to do the same thing for quite a while now. However, a wrench got thrown into the gears, because I came upon a 900RR six spoke rear wheel (with cush drive & brake rotor) for next to nothing. After seeing the six spoke and stock three spoke wheels next to each other, the six spoke just looks so much better in my opinion.

My dillema? I want to do the SP-2 swingarm swap, but does the 900RR rear wheel fit the SP-2 swingarm? I tried searching to no avail. If not, I will have to keep the stock swingarm and go with the 900RR swingarm brace. Unless the SP-1 six spoke wheel fits the SP-2 swingarm?

900RR rear wheel ($40-$75)
RC-51 SP-1 & SP-2 front or rear wheel ($200-$450)

In case anyone was curious, for the front, I'm going with CBR1000RR forks and SP-1 six spoke front wheel.

With a bit of measuring and the appropriate spacers you can usually get anything to fit.

Bit of a risk I know however what have you got to lose with the price you paid for the 900 wheel?

The 900 wheel will NOT fit an SP 2 swing arm.

But why will it not fit?

1. Does it just need spacers sourced (swapped in or made)
2. Different bearing installed due to axle size (easa fix)
3. Wrong width from sprocket to break disk?
4. Something else

I would say all of the above plus the hub, not 100% sure, but if I'm not mistaken, even if you do find a bearing for the hub it may not fit a larger axle.

Well... short and sweet... As is, you are 100% correct... With a little thinking, and very, very minimal work, it sure does...


Because, it damned well fit when I last bolted it up, and still does a year later... The friend I helped swap in a SP1 swing on his bike insisted on keeping his six-spokes...


Swap the bearings in the wheel over for the right size, and swap the hub for a 929/954/1000 RR one, with the right bearing already in there, and use the spacers from matching bike, and it bolts right up...


The level of "standardization" on Honda's parts amaze me still... I guess why re-design the hub, if you have a nicely working one? Just plonk larger bearings in there, and keep the rest of the mold, and you got one for a new bike model... Then every five years or so, you go over it, and lighten it up a little, keeping the same shape and dimensions...
