Newb but not a squid
Howdy fellas and ladies
Just popping in to say hi Looking for my first superhawk under strong recomendation from a guy here at work that's had 3 of em I've been off bikes a few years but come from a 1991 Honda CBR 600F2 Night I brought it home. It went in the garage and didn't see light till i was done http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0016_large.jpg When she did finally show her face, here she was http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0051_large.jpg Pending my miata i've been rolling in selling, i'm hoping to pickup a local VTR that appears to be cleanly modded I've done some homework. It looks like it's got the Mario Nava fairings as well as an undertail and rear hugger i havn't seen before already and it's in overall REALY good shape Only problem is the speedo/odometer stopped, which i'm guessing is due to the R/R which he replaced but had a shop replace with with another OEM one rather than the R1/R6 swap. It's currently got straight pipes with his homebrew C/F slashcuts on em (HOly effer this thing is loud!!) but he's also got home wrapped with C/F D&D pipes as well as the stock setup. But for $2k and *roughly*30k miles on it, i'm going to be pulling the trigger once my car sells http://images.craigslist.org/3nc3m73...5af95c11ac.jpg If I can get it soon, i've already got a few things planned HID projector retro with high power DRL's to keep wear down on the HID setup Also planning on either TBR or Devil highmounts |
Oh, and forgot to ask, anyone recognize the bike?
|
Welcome. Don't recognize the bike.
|
looks pretty nice. That lower fairing looks awful close to the ground, and at a strange angle?
good luck and welcome back to riding and to the forum. |
Thanks for the welcome!
As to the lower fairing, it's not any lower than any other lower fairing i've seen. But what do you mean about the angle? It's the Mario Nava upper and lower fairings |
Alright, i've got some questions on this bike raising red flags
The speedo and odometer isn't working, and he has replaced the reg/rect. with a used OEM one and it didn't start again (The speedo/odo didn't start, not hte bike, sorry) (leading me to think it's already going bad as well) He took it to a mechanic and they replaced the ignition, which obviously didn't fix the speedo/odo. They then quoted him $400 to replace the whole cluster Does any of this seem fishy? It just leaves an uneasy feeling when i search and find no reason to replace the ignition to fix the speedo/odo. . . . |
Hmmmm... When the power stops, typically from the R/R issues the the cluster gets weird and then stops altogether, but i have not read or heard of permanent dammage. Is there a battery in this? can it be charged? Regardless of what is going on with the charging system, a fresh baterry should start the bike up and everything should run - at least until it discharges again. A used OEM R/R is not a good solution, but its not going to stop the bike from running if the Battery is charged.
As for the cluster, there are much cheeper used ones on Ebay. Bottom line is that I personally would not buy a Shawk with ~30k for $2k that did not run |
when a R/R goes, it pops the main fuse as I recall. Its on the clutch side of the rear of the bike... check to see if that is toast. When My R/R went it would not start because the fuse.

From what I'm told, bike runs great and eletrical system (other than speed-o/odo) works great and charges no problem
It fired up and idled no problem the night we checked it out, his father in law had taken it around to warm up before we got there, so i'm going to request when I show up to test ride, he not have it warmed, i want to see how it fires up from a cold start (I'm waiting on my miata to sell so i can have cash before i test ride) The tach works fine And I agree on the OEM R/R being a bad replacment, i'll be buying an R1/R6 off ebay today just to have in my box of goodies for the when/if happens |
edited above post, it was the speedo/odo that didn't start working after the R/R was replaced
The bike ran fine |
sorry must have misread the post...
|
No, you're good.
I wrote it out exactly how you guys read it, it's my bad But does it make sense to replace the ignition cause the speedo doesn't work? After 30 sec searching i came up with "Replace the R/R" or that doesn't fix it, check the gear to see if it isn't stripped out I didn't read anything about replacing the ignition |

It's the Mario Nava upper and lower fairings As far as your electrical issue, i would remove the fairings and go over all the wiring checking for loose connections, blown fuses, rubbing wires. Have your battery load tested and replace it if necessary. Best to prepare it yourself in terms of fill and initial charge. Read the precautions in the R/R threads relative to isolating the positive and neg batt cables so that you don't fry the R/R. Probably a stupid simple problem that will be discovered if you investigate. |
I don't own the bike yet, but i'll def go that route if i do get it
Much appreciated! here's a few other craigslist pics http://images.craigslist.org/3n13m23...e488ef1ac0.jpg http://images.craigslist.org/3o33p53...42d8791c50.jpg It is lower than my F2 was, so i'll have to keep that in mind though |
those pics look diff in terms of the angle. Good lookin hawk.
http://web.tiscali.it/mario_nava/vtr1000r_e.html look at the pic of the first one on the left that is sitting on a rear stand and see if it compares to the bike when you look at it live. |
That's his new set of fairings and it's up on a rear stand vs the kickstand.
I'll snap a few pics myself (higher res) when I meet up with the guy again) I like the set on the bike as they keep the stock headlight |
I thought it was a weird angle too, until I noticed the bottom of the bellypan was painted the same color as the concrete below it.
|
Doh, yeah, it has a grey painted bellypan
I get what you're saying now lol |
