New to forum! Have some quick questions!
 

Hello everyone!


I am brand new to the Superhawk forum but I'm not new to riding. This August will mark my 10 year mark of riding (I know it isn't nearly as much as some). I recently sold my '01 Aprilia RSV Mille to pay some important medical bills but now that everything is back to normal I'm looking for another bike. I have always enjoyed every Honda I've owned and would like to stick with them this time around.

I've found the above bike and have read some pretty extensive reviews BUT I'd like to get the forums opinion. There are a couple things you need to know about the bike and myself before you comment though...


The Bike..You can tell the year and mileage from the link, I also inquired and have the proof that the CCT's were both replaced with aftermarkets along with regular routine maintenance. I also see that the exhaust is high mounted and does not have passenger footpegs or seat. Is this something that is easily changeable or would I need a completely new set of cans, pegs, and seat?


Myself...I am 6'2" 175lbs 27 year old male. I have been riding for 10 years in august. I have owned (in the following order) '80 Honda Magna 750, '84 Yamaha Maxim, '12 CBR250RR (My favorite bike so far), '78 Honda CB400 (I rebuilt into a tasteful cafe racer but had to sell), '01 Kawasaki Ninja 250, '01 Aprilia RSV Mille. I can't stand people who drag race and would much prefer to drag my knee through a corner on the back roads.

TLDR; Should I buy the hawk in the link? Can I move the cans to allow for a passenger or do I need new seat, cans, pegs? Any other words of advice for a would be Superhawk owner?

Welcome aboard. You can't not have a passenger seat. The seat is all one-piece. Just take off the solo seat cover and the passenger portion of the seat is underneath. Many aftermarket systems came with longer bolts and spacers to move the passenger pegs out past the cans. Two Brothers did not. But that doesn't mean it isn't easily rectified in the same fashion. Finding a set will be more of a challenge, but you can just get your own bolts and aluminum spacers. If the bike doesn't come with them passenger pegs are fairly easy to come by for $40-$50 a pair depending on condition (pretty sure I have a spare pair).

In those pictures at least, it still has the stock CCTs. Maybe they put new stock ones in or maybe changed them after the pics were taken?

The bike looks really clean. I mean it SHOULD be worth that much but consider that a '98 with 355 miles on it sold on Ebay about a year ago for $3401, so I'd try to get the price down a little. Having said that it looks really clean, with exhaust, new tires, etc it's not a terrible deal, especially considering it's from a dealer.

This seller is the guy that contacted me looking to add passenger pegs, and why I reached out to you. I believe he works at that dealership.

So to the OP, welcome. You and I must live very close as AMS is my closest Honda dealership. I personally think it's a bit high on price. Those cct's do look like autos which to most of us is concerning. If you wanted them changed, I'd be willing to talk with you about it. I work at a small used sportbike shop in Hanover called Sportbike Specialties.
Also appears to be damage on the right side clutch cover. So a real close inspection should be done before going further.

Not really hard. There are a couple really good how to threads to walk you through the process. But you must be meticulous. If the chain skips a tooth, cam timing needs reset. Basically, remove the airbox, carbs and cam covers to expose the chains so you can zip tie them to prevent the jump. The choke fittings to carb can be very delicate, so caution needs to be taken there.

Inspect the back sides of the rads real good. If it went down hard enough, you'll see impressions in the fins (more negotiating ammo). Also, the R/R is the other remaining part that has regular issues on VTR's. You could ask if that was ever touched.

Like you, I was not new to riding, but indeed was new to the SHawk. I did extensive research on big twins which led me to the SHawk. Many thanks to the forum gurus here that helped guide my choice.
I was able to find a 2000 with 9300 miles for $2700. It's an absolute creampuff! Mine has not had any mods done other than slip ons. I've only ridden it for about 100 miles because the horror stories of catastrophic failure due to the CCTs. I have new manual CCTs in hand as well as the R/R kit sold by forum member Erik Marquez. Hopefully I will be doing this work tomorrow. I will post up when I do.

Until this summer, I had-used-liked my Cortech tail bag. Here's a quick google pic, they also have a saddle bag system. Not sure how it will work with high mounts.

I have and really like the Ventura bike pack system similar to what is shown in first picture although my bags (I have 2 different sizes for versatility - you can use each single or both zipped together) are black, not red. I also have a tankbag for even more luggage capacity and/or convenience. When not travelling/touring I remove the tall 'backrest' rack and run the smaller sport rack (2nd pic) with smaller 10L sport pack (3rd pic) for everyday use. I also have the simple passenger grabrail (4th pic ) although I hardly ever use it. Nothing touches the bodywork so no cosmetic damage can occur from the Ventura system. I also have a Ventura headlight lens protector; not sure if they still offer that.

The Ventura system was developed right here in New Zealand, and all of my bikes from 1982 to my current flock have the system installed. Unless you really pack a lot of weight in, they make no appreciable difference to handling or feel, and they are great at keeping the luggage away from bodywork, and easy to fit and remove. On my VTR I usually just have the rear loop rail installed which makes getting the bike onto its race stand much easier.
