Needing Tires
 

I will soon be replacing the Metzler M3's that I have had for 1 1/2 seasons - approximately 5K miles. The rear tire has developed a noticeable flat spot from super slabbing it to and from the mountains and twisty backroads. Aside from that issue, I have been very pleased with the performance of the tires.

As far as a replacement goes, I am considering the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT and Pirelli Diablo Corsa III. I like these tires because of the dual compound and the fact that with gear on, I am pushing 275 pounds. I need a tire that will perform but not be soft in the middle.

Are these two tires my best options for replacement or are there other brands I might consider?

I don't have many miles on them yet, but I am very pleased with the Bridgestone BT021's I put on. They have a dual compound rear, and a single compound front. I don't weigh but 190lbs, but for the type of roads I have around here, they were the best bet for me. If I wanted to spend the extra money, I would have gone the route of Avon Storms.

I have the PP 2cts and love them for riding in the mountains and the occasional trackday ! But if you are doing a lot of highway riding you will not get anywhere near 5k out of a rear 2ct like the M-3 ! ( the center will wear quick ) I am about to need a rear tire myself and am seriously considering a Pilot Road 2 this next time . Hopefully it will hold up longer and still have some decent grip .

Continental Road ATTACK! Turn in is amazing... Stiffer center compound in the middle for long life. Good in the rain and grip well in 30 degree weather.

My friend's rear Conti ATTACK was showing cord on the rear tire at about 1200 miles.

On a monster 750, not exactly a power house bike.

If you're not racing, want tires that stick good while lasting a while, the discontinued Dunlop D220 at Cycle Gear, $80 rear and $60 are as good a deal as you'll find.

How well would that 170 rear fit on the Superhawk?

Bummer, sounds like it would have been a good deal. I'm sure some cheap d220's are kicking around somewhere....

Yeah. Just because the website central warehouse ran out doesn't mean there isn't one on the rack at the local Cycle Gear. If I wanted one I'd call them and ask.

You might look at the all new Bridgestone BT 003, perfect for enjoying twisties. I run it front/rear for almost 2500mls and they are still good for another 1500-2000mls. For my opinion it gives you more feedback than the Michelin PP or Conti Road/Race Attack and it sticks to the road like hell. Not just a bargain, but its worth every cent.

I like my pilot road tires, never had traction issues and they have great mileage. The only thing is they don't provide the same feedback as the Pilot Powers I was running before, but for what I do on the street they still stuck when I pushed it.

When I first got the bike I put Dunlop Road Smart tires on it. They lasted about 9K miles.

I like my road smarts as well. They work well in the rains of the north west

Let me try to share my experience.I've plowed through 33+ sets of metzlers all M1 and M3's and one set of roadtecs on this bike.Im maybe 210+ with gear.I average 1200-1400 miles a set.The twistys as you say are 2 miles down the road for me so almost never any freeway action.The things I noticed.

1.I was impressed.They handlled,stuck,and felt fine at illegal speeds.

2.I believe they have a stiffer sidewall.I thought I could fell it,and they seemed to take the rough stuff better.The roadtec does have a higher load rate.Maybe a stiffer sidewall would work better for heavyier riders.

3.I also believe that they are a smidge taller with more tread depth thus giving more tire from the start.

4.One odd thing about the roadtec rear was theres no tread in the center.Made it hard to read the tire.

Metzler has a new roadtec out by the way.I went back to the M3 but I might give it a try again.I just happen to like elephants, but I would think the above is true for all brands.And that they are all close in performance.
Sport/touring tires that is.

Which Conti Atk and on what bike? Even the Sport gets 4500+ and the Rd 5500+, maybe you could toast a Atk Race...

When did you get the Duny RdSmts? (k in how many months & what type of riding? Much slabbing? I thought they were relatively new and was considering them over the Conti Rd Atks again. I've done the Bridges they cupped, the Avon STs are not bad bud more pricy. Shink has a couple but they are not too much cheaper..

I really like my Power 2ct's..

I went from D220's that were no where near sticky enough for my canyon - mountain runs, to D208's that weren't bad but didn't last very long, to my Power 2ct's.. we shall see how long these last, but so far I am loving their feel and traction, even in the wet and snow..

I'm glad your wealthy, if I needed 33 sets in 46k miles, I'd be even deeper in the poor house and could not ride.

I also have Shinko 005 tires, have about 1500 miles on rear one. Still looks new. I got about 6k miles out of a conti-force rear before the Shinko.

I put them on at the end of June and used them till end of October. Mostly superslab riding up to work and back.
Of teh miles I put on them probably 1000 was canyons and such.

I've got just over 6,000 miles on my Pirelli Diablo Corsa III's now. Did develop a center (and sides) flat spot and am looking to replace with the same tire. No complaints. Never slid on me.

8500 miles out of a BT-021. Most of that was loaded down heading to Cali going straight. Unless these Stradas do better I'll be getting another set of 021's for the VFR. Trying BT-016's on the Superhawk this year.

Like my BT-021's. Had 207's, Avon's and the stock crap.

Like the dual comp of the 021's. Good in the wet stuff too.

Conti Road Attack went pretty quick for me too from ok to no tread in about 1k miles. I really like the combo of Road2 rear and 2CT front.

I put some miles on the bike today with my new tires. Air temps were hovering in the mid 50's, and road temps couldn't have been that warm. I got on the throttle good coming out of some corners with the BT-021's, and they were very solid!

I much prefer them over the Metzlers I had on before!:)

Just got a set of BT-016s in, and will get them fitted at the track (where it's cheap!) for my upcoming trackday. The Pilot Powers I have been running are great, but the Bridgestones are 3-compound rears so hopefully they'll last a little longer.
