My cooling problem solved(hopefully)
I picked up my Hawk last summer from a guy on ebay who had crashed at a track day.The bike sat for 2 yrs in his garage before I got it.I love the bike but no matter what I did it always wanted to run hot.Did a coolant flush, ran water wetter, wired the fan always on,still getting too hot. Finally I had enough and pulled the entire cooling system apart and viola!Looked like the radiators were full of crack rocks. All of the passages were blocked an there was a big pile in the bottom of the radiators. So hopefully I can get them cleaned out and quit watching my temp guage and concentrate on riding now.

By crack rocks do you mean like white calcified deposits? He probably used tap water right out of the hose then instead of distilled. Good detective work.
|
Or, if by crack rocks, you mean nose-candy, sell that ish for some mod-money! :D
|
Yeah they were calcified deposits.A big pile at the bottom and some growing out of every water jacket.I'd guess a street value of about a grand if you figure 10$ a rock.:)

Wow, I wonder how the water pump mechanical seal survived! Do you get any weeping from the hole?
|
It didnt make it either.Im replacing it as we speak.I wonde why cars can use hose water seemingly with no ill effects but it wreaks such havoc on a bike?
|
You can use CLR, the calcium lime rust stuff, to clean the system once assembled. Dilute it partially and run it through the system. Operate the vehicle for 10min once warm, and then flush the system completely.

I'm an automotive technician. Trust me cars can't get away with it either. Some just last longer.

Our shop has mixed concentrate with tap water ever since I've been working there....management is too lazy to stock distilled.

Too lazy? Probably. But I'm thinking more like too cheap:shock: . Seems like an ethical dilemma.
