Mpg?
 

Hello everyone. I just picked up a 2002 Super Hawk recently and I'm loving it. I've always wanted one. But anyways, I'm just wondering what should be the average mpg. Mine is really sucking!!! Compared to my 600RR and my VFR800...the VTR is just drinking the gas I put in there. I just filled up at the beginning of the week and i'm already past the halfway mark. Two bars left to be exact and I've only put 56 miles on it. Currently it has a Yoshi exhaust, K&N filter, and a Dynojet stage 1 jet kit. How can I increase MPG and maintain power. What is the best combination of jets to use. Please...any info will help. Thanks in advance!!!

One more question. The temperature runs alot hotter than my inline 4 and my V4. Is that normal for the V twin?

I think the bike will run a little hotter than an inline motor because of the sideways mounted radiators.As far as mileage,your wrist will make a big difference but fuel consumption is the price you pay for all that torque from a big carbureted twin!

How many gallons did you put in? My SHawk would typically return 30-32mpg. I didn't have a digi cluster on mine, though, so I have no idea about the bars.

Hahaha...you know...I didn't pay attention how much I put in there when I filled it up.

I've been doing mostly highway miles on it. But I do sit in a lot of traffic living in the D.C. area. I've been keeping the r.p.m.'s at about 5000. I guess I could lower that when cruising the highway, but I like to have that punch when I want to pass real quick.

How many gallons is the tank on a 02?

They get terrible gas mileage. I got average 24mpg, at best 34 if you are easy on it.

Man...with that kind of mileage...I'll be riding the VFR to work and the VTR on shorter rides. Dang...and I thought my car was a gas guzzler. LOL

I live in the DC area too. I live west and work my way in to Dulles airport. So, mostly highway miles and very little stop and go. I would say when commuting I get about40 miles to the gallon based on the stock Odometer.

Oh yeah, stock pipes, filter, jetting and gear ratios / chain.

40-42mpg for me mostly highway with stock jetting.

Just FYI in the future, theres a button at the top tool bar. It says "search", and if you click on it, you can type in stuff like "mileage" and by doing so, search this WHOLE forum for all posts relating to your question! Pretty sweet, eh?

Anyhow, this is a real common newbie question, and the answer is what you think it is - the SH gets lousy mileage, like <30. Thats what happens with 48mm carbs and cylinders the size of coffee cans...

taskmasta, wellcome. I just checked and am getting 39mpg dyno jet kit and Jardine slipons. don't remember but I think the jets are 180 and 185.

32-34mpg. Regeared to 15-43 from the stock 16-41. That alone kills it a bit. You will do a lot better on the mileage by getting it in as tall a gear as you can on the highway. 5k rpm cruising is what is killing ya. I live with it, as none of my bikes gets fantastic mileage. Cept for the Priller. She gets 45mpg flogging along at 90mph. Gotta love the uber scooter!

I get 38 MPG - have you checked the bikes state of tune? Mine was in the 20's when I bought it. I Sync'd the carbs, adjusted the TPS per factory specs (search the forum for tutorials), cleaned the K&N air filter, changed the plugs, ran some acetone through the dirty carbs to clean them, removed the oil pan and scraped the gunk, cleaned the oil pickup screen, ran a can of gunk cleaner with oil through the crank case to clean the oil galleys,changed the oil with synthetic to factory weight and changed the clutch fluid to dot 5 synthetic. I took the fuel screen out of the tank (The hawk has no fuel fiter) and cleaned it. I also had some vacuum leaks beacuse some one had removed the PAIR system and some hoses and didn't plug everything up right.
Get a shop manual or download it off this site.

I Have Yoshi exhaust also but I think I have stock jets. Check with Greg the site administrator on the best setting for the jets on your carbs.

This comes up often because they really do suck some gas, and having a guage makes it seem bad. Spirited riding is low 30's always, and cruising on twisties with an even throttle 35-37, babying it from 3-4000 max gives me 40-42.

I don't know how people get in the 20's however, unless they ride it like an I4!

Well I'm used to an inline 4 and V4 so I do keep the rpm kinda high. Get I need to learn.

I own an Interceptor as well, and find that I get very similar fuel economy on both bikes. My 'Hawk has stock jetting and Jardine high mounts which probably means it's a little on the lean side. On a recent ride at a casual 65mph, I netted 47 mpg between gas stops. After 108 miles, I topped off the SH with 2.3 gallons. Not bad for a bike reputed to get such poor mileage. Where I do find I get poor mileage is short-trip stop and go. She doesn't run so good when she's cold and on the choke. Thats when I get 30 mpg (or worse)!!

yea i get 30 when i'm on it, but minimum usually with a little hot roddin is 34, i've gottin 38 out of it at best here in west texas, where it is usually 100+degrees runnin at 4k is right at 74 mph 5k is about 90 what the hell u doin goin 90

To the guys getting over 35 mpg on the highways; What is your average speed and rpms ? It seems like I can get ~140 miles on a tank if I really baby the throttle which is obviously is no fun (and hardly ever done :)). My typical highway speeds are 85-90 (odometer reading) which I usually get 110 to 120 mpg.

I get mid 30's on my Hawk....About a hundred mile on a tank before the fuel light comes on!! I can stop every 100, but would prefer more distance. I have an 85 VF1000R and have a range of about 165 miles before reserve, however per gallon fuel mileage is about the same.

If I ride a steady 70 mph (around 4k w/ stock gearing) I get about 45 mpg. Just be real easy on the throttle.
