Key code?

I misplaced the keys to my Superhawk. When I got the bike, there was a code on a little metal tag on the keyring.

I wrote that code down in the owner's manual. I went to the locksmith today and they cut a key using that number, but it didn't work in the bike. They're telling me I must've written the number down wrong.

I called the Honda dealer and asked if I could get the key code using the VIN number. He said that wasn't possible.

Is there anywhere else I can find my key code? Or any other way I can get a key made?

Thanks

If you bring the lock to a good locksmith he should be able to make a key for it. We did this a couple years back when my buddy lost his key to his 900RR. We just brought he ignition to the locksmith and he was able to make a key for it.

you can remove the seat lock easier. I was told by the dealer that they can't go by the code on the newer models (could also be that they didn't want to bother) - mine is an '02.

I have had keys cut by the code on older bikes without a problem at the locksmiths.

I have no idea when they started doing it, but my '05 won't start without a key from the factory because it has a little chip in it. They told me not to lose the little tag (code), otherwise I'd be forced to buy a new ignition if I lost my keys.

That's discouraging. Anybody know what it might cost to have a key made if I bring in the lock?

I used to cut keys all the time at a Honda Dealership.
Yes, the silver code tag is for cutting keys.
Bring it to a Honda Dealer who cuts keys along with proof of ownership.
They will be able to use that tag code by looking it up in a book to get the correct number of cuts and depths to cut you a new key.
Make two copies. Hide the other one in a safe place.

You guys who have had keys made, can you tell me what the blank key says?

There should be a brand name and a part number under it. I'm having trouble getting the right blank.

Thanks
