jetting

My ’98 SH originated in Florida where the owner had installed aftermarket cans and a K&N air filer. From the notes he kept it has a Factory Jet Kit - 178 Front, 180 Rear, clip on #3 and idle mixture 2 ½ turns out. I live above 6000’ in Colorado and I have returned it to the stock exhaust (keeping the K&N). After 4K miles or so the plugs look a little dark, but the bike runs GREAT, even up over Independence Pass at 14,000’. My question is, if the bike has been richened up to run at sea level with a more open exhaust, is it too rich to run in Colorado with the stock exhaust? Jusy how critical is all this jetting business anyway?

Glenwood Springs, RIGHT ON! I need to take a bike trip and ride up to the pool there! Too fun!

Sorry could help with the jetting if it was a MX bike... but not the sports bike... I do know that my 98 SH was jetted specifically for here (Colorado Springs).

If you really can't find any info I can call my mechanic, he races everything (Sports bikes, MX, SuperMoto and even the Pikes Peak Hill Climb) and is very good!

Drop one size on both front and rear mains. That should help the black plug issue and probably give you a bit more power.
