Guess you won't be needing the anti rattle gear!
Sorry to hear that the crank is gone. At least it's fixable. |
The search is on for a new OEM crank. Plan B is a good used one.......
|
Do you have a lightened flywheel? If you do the lack of vibration dampening could be the culprit...
And during previous engine work, was the crank modified in any way? |
He saw the can of worms and he picked it up and opened it.
|
I have a lightened flywheel... does this mean my crank is gonna break?!?!
Let the rumors start... LOL James |
A new crank has been ordered... thankfully they are still available from Honda (!)..... I will get this one balanced to the pistons and rods too, though I will give the matter of fitting an OEM (unmodified) flywheel some thought.....
|
You could have the flywheel mounted to the crank when balanced. We used to balance the entire rotating assemblies like that.
James |
good point, cheers

Crank, clutch, rids, pistons and flywheel get balanced as a rotating assembly |
Were broken cranks something that Ditchfield and others that raced built motors had issues with?

As Stephan alluded to, aggressive cams were the root of the problem on failed cranks in heavily modded engine. This is why HRC made a run of 20 billet cranks (very expensive and no longer available), these having a gradual radius where the counterweights meet the shaft, eliminating the 90 degree corner which was the start of stress fractures and ultimately failures.... This is not, however, supposed to be a problem for stock or Stage 1 engines.... though 150K miles on, it may have finished mine off.... won't know until I see the failed crank.... after having communicated with Roger D, the new crank will be getting balanced as well, and lightened flywheel will go back on.... still debating what I will do cam-wise.....

Just ordered some new conrod bolts (are just shy of $50 apiece!!!!!)....... gonna try to do this right (albeit expensive).......
|
rod bolts came in.... all told, it cost me just shy of $300 CAN for 4 bolts (debated recycling the old ones then thought about what happens if they fail...)... man is this gonna cost me a bundle again..... *sigh*

sucks you have to go through all this!! I have test ridden a FZ-09 before. They sure are neat, but I just didn't fall in love with it. I only had it in the low-power "rain" mode (all the dealer would allow) and it would still pull the front end off the ground w/ ease. Lots of low end grunt with plenty up high!! Reminds me of a more tame speed triple (love those!!) Good luck with all the repairs!!
|
Waiting for an FZ-09 to come out with full fairings and the white/red and/or yellow/black Yamaha paint schemes... That would be neato :)
Not that i would buy one... My Superhawk is too nice. James |
2015 Yamaha FJ-09, Street Motorcycle, Supersport Touring

Das crank hast arrived...... onto the bearings......

Just for future reference there is a guy in Kentucky that specializes in crank rebuilds.
Mr.Crackshaft.com He does really good and fast work and I used him a few times on my XR426r supermoto for the street that I installed the crank from a TRX400 four wheeler making the XR electric start with reverse! With shipping, balancing, Razor Rod kit the cost was under $200 bucks plus he tosses in a cool T shirt. SIRR1 |

The bearings are in............... the bearings are in................... the bearings are in................ :)
Oh, have I mentioned? The bearings are in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! P.S. special kudos to my bud Jack Flash for going out of his way to help me with this :) |
Awesome news! Looks like you and I might get our bikes together at about the same time. My engine is together, just waiting for the frame to be done at the powder coaters. Then ASSEMBLY!
|
Good news, hopefully you will get to ride again shortly
|
and so the adventure continues.....
just got back from Phase I of my summer vacation (with my daughter), ever-hopeful to find my bike up and running upon my return......... No sir not to be.... (yet again!), shop decided to replace the head gaskets (not sure it was necessary, but alas, the heads are off so they need replacement now).... more waiting....... I am beginning to wonder if I will get thing back before the snow flies...... |
I feel like engine rebuilds shouldnt take this long, granted you were waiting for parts for a while..
Good luck to you sir |
think I'll write book about this after it's all (if it ever is) over.... though I don't expect anyone will believe it.......
