I hit a Duck

Yes that is right yesterday while on a ride I hit a Duck. Not a Ducatti a real mallard duck.
From my left I could see the two of them flyng diagonal across the road. I was travelling at about 60. I thought to myself that there is no way in hell I would hit it so I stayed on the gas.
The little bastard was flapping his wings for all he was worth but couldn't get any more speed or altitude.
I caught him right in the body with my knuckle protector on my left hand. Damn thing was heavy. I didn't go down I just kept on going.
As for the duck well I didn't see him in my rearview mirror so I think he lived.

+1.. not yesterday.. but in the past. Damn things are slow taking off. Wings flapping in slow motion.. And they are much bigger than I thought.

I did hit a chicken while I was driving a Honda Accord. I saw in the rear view mirror what looked like an exploded pillow in the air. Feathers were everywhere.

Glad it didnt hit you in the head or body. (your duck)

swordfish Apr 20, 2009 10:22 AM

I hit some sort of bird last fall...I think it was a sparrow right in the chest. Hurt like a bitch. Really would have hurt if i didn't have a leather jacket on.

hawxter996 Apr 20, 2009 11:06 AM

had a bird glance off my helmet.

was following a buddy of mine on his busa, bird swooped down
and under his bike at 85-90 mph.
never touched him just kept flying.

then there was the time he nailed a squirrel and spun his guts
upon my chest.

I hit a bird yesterday also, but I was in a car luckily. Stupid quail take off like an overloaded cargo jet.

That's a good description. Years ago I was riding my '78 400 Hawk into the setting sun and accidentally hit a duck as she and then her young waddled out of the tall grass along the road's narrow shoulder. Poor critter didn't deserve that. Except for the jolt it was like hitting a feather pillow. Those feathers really get under your visor for a bit. For those that snowmobile in the off season, it's like charging at speed through cat tails in a slough. The crap from the cat tails get in your eyes/nose etc.

Later, about 2AM I was following a logging truck waiting for the oncoming traffic to pass when my tank met my face. I thought the truck had dropped a chunk of log. After I checked everything out best I could (really friggin dark) I road back to impact location and there were 2 steaming halves of a porcupine. I never saw it. Those things sure aren't very reflective. All in all not the best day but I was off to see my gal. Being young, dumb, horny and blinded by light in your face sure makes for a bad mix with evening critters wandering about. Not much damage so being in the middle of nowhere just I kept going.

when I was about 10 I was riding my dirtbike in my woods. All of a sudden my head got knocked down from the rear. Then I saw the owl swoop in front of me.

Left claw marks in my helmet.

Turkey vulture, 70 mph, R100RS.

This birds natural defensive reaction to stress is to unload from both ends to lighten the load for airborne escape.

I remained upright behind a smashed windscreen but spent an hour at a gas station with a hose and borrowed brush. The vulture did a back flip in my airstream to belly flop onto the pavement behind me. We both walked away from the encounter.

A duck or a chicken looks pretty good to me in retrospect.

I hit a turkey buzzard at somewhere around 90 MPH last year. Impacted on my right shoulder and neck. I was full song in a right hander when it lifted off from the edge of the road. I ducked the best I could but couldn't get under it. Rung my bell big time and my shoulder was sore for a couple of days. When it hit I heard bone crunch and thought I had broken my collarbone. I guess it was his bones. Those fuggers are big!

i hit a small bird one time. i was doing 260km/h and it hit me in the right shoulder. i looked in my mirror and the thing was flipping through the air like a boomerang, but it wasn't coming back to from where it was going(gone). it felt like i got punched.

another time i hit a partridge in my exploder. there is nothing more dumb than a partridge. that thing ran across my path and was on the other side and in the clear. then it got scared and turned around and back into my path! looked in the mirror and saw a cloud of feathers.

FL02SupaHawk996 Apr 20, 2009 03:31 PM

I had an old lady pulling out from a retirement community in FL fly me the bird...does that count?

LOL!

I remember one time back when I still had my Gixxer, I was going about 25 or 28 mph and looked over to see this crow in a field matching my speed for at least 100 feet. We didn't colide or nothin. He just flew off in another direction but it was pretty cool.

Hit so hard the contents of its stomach emptied in my shattered headlight bucket. A snake in its talons and a partially digested frog popped out.

I can't top that last one. Haha. I did hit a bat with my head last year at about 50mph though. Little flying rat thing swooped down, must have been trying to eat the bugs off my helmet or something, he crashed right into my visor and left this nasty greasy smudge, at least he got some of the bugs off!

supermatt996 Apr 20, 2009 10:46 PM

I jumped a possum 4th gear a night couldnt see it until it was to late. just happy i didnt crash

Last year in August when I was on my way home from work teaching karate I was transitioning from one freeway to another on a curve and hit a bird with my helmet. I just tilted my head down a little bit hoping that it wouldn't knock my visor up if I hit it since I was doing about 60.

Riding bicycles it's not unheard of to have a squirrel run in front of you and try jump through your apparently "open" wheel. Needless to say, the spokes do a dandy job of imitating a food processor when moving fast enough.
The squirrel smoothie is then flung upon the unfortunate rider..............

C-weed Apr 21, 2009 07:17 AM

Wow, even more reason to wear proper gear!

You should gut it the rest of the way and wear it on your helmet.

I used to do that with deer on my dirtbike back in highschool. I would ride into a field and there would be a group of deer. when they scattered, I'd pick the biggest one and we would have a race. I could hang with them till we hit the woods.
