I have to ask...

OK... this IS my first Honda bike... and I DIDN'T buy it from a dealer, so I probally missed out on some sales pitch all about it, but...

WTF is the little light above my headlight for?

I've seen them before on hondas... and never really cared to ask. Now that I own one, I've been asked three times, and always have to do the little shoulder shrug with the dumfounded look on my face...

Re: I have to ask...

In some countries it is mandatory for a motorcycle to have a light on at all times. It will come on automatically when the engine is started.

So there you go, now you know!

Re: I have to ask...

Ah HA! I knew there had to be some reason for it...

OK, OK... aside from it's place as a conversation starter...

superhawk22 03-22-2006 10:56 PM

It's good for wheelies at night.

I don't have mine anymore. I got asharkskinz street fairing and they don't have a hole for that light. just the main one. wanna lose it? buy some sharkskinz.

Halbard 03-23-2006 07:33 AM

Don't necessairly want to loose it... got to talking to a nice guy today when I pulled in for the morning cherry coke... he asked WTF it was, and NOW I have an answer for him...

Re: I have to ask...

I heard they were a parking light.
In Europe they require you leave the parking light on if you are on the side of the road.
THere should be a ignition key detent where you can remove the key & leave the parking lights on.
How do I know?
When I had my other motorcycle I thought I was locking the forks when I parked at work but came out that night to find I had left the parking light on instead & the battery was so weak it wouldn't start the M/C...DHO !
(Had turned the key the wrong way...one way was fork lock the other was parking light)

Re: I have to ask...

See I thought it was to let the Mother ship know your location on Earth, kind of a signal light or something....Shew, glad you cleared that up...lol

Re: I have to ask...

Yep, that's what we call them here - Parking Lights.

Re: I have to ask...

So.... what youre saying is the mothership HASEN'T been getting my messages???? :D

Hummm... might end up back in Germany in a couple years... might be just the excuse I need to take the bike this time.

"But honey.... it's got the parking light already..." :D

Re: I have to ask...

I thought it was put there because too many cars run with one headlight out.
Having a light above the headlight helps separate us from the chimps in the cages.

Thanks for clearing up my misconception. :)

I really do learn a lot here. :)

Then again I have seen some things I wish I could forget.

discojuggernaut 02-03-2007 01:44 AM

Well that 'begs' the $64,000 question.....How do you turn this parking light on?

(I'm from California, tried turning key all the way to the right)

Hawkrider 02-03-2007 08:16 AM

You're talking about the marker light above the headlight, right? This light comes on with the headlight. If it isn't coming on then your bulb is burned out.

EngineNoO9 02-03-2007 08:37 AM

I unplugged mine *shrug*

mikstr 02-03-2007 05:17 PM

I removed the bulb on mine and painted the lens cap red (from the inside).

discojuggernaut 02-03-2007 09:48 PM

Aha...Lo and behold, the bulb was missing. Previous owner took it out. Think I'm gonna pop in an amber bulb there in lieu of front running lights.

I have a super bright LED in mine.
More light is better.

discojuggernaut 02-06-2007 01:18 AM

Interesting. Where do you find an LED that fits the slot. What is the bulb spec number?
