Hit a deer today

Doing about 75. My Dad and I were out today and had a fantastic run. On the way home on 88 North, a deer jumped out from the other side of the road. His head hit my headlight, cracked my fairing, broke off my turn signal, bent the front fender therefore chipping some paint, dented the muffler??? and tweaked some other shit. My guages quit working too. Nothing was leaking, so I rode her home. Once I gather up my guts I'll go over in the garage and snap some pics. I'm gonna figure out a way to get her back on the road ASAP.

I read on here how to take off that fairing, but I forget, so I'll just start taking shit apart like I do anything else. I'm completely amazed how well the bike faired out to be honest though, it coulda been alot worse. My leg hurts like fawking HELL to walk on, but I really don't care about that aspect, just how long will it take to get her going again is what I'm worried about! I plan on having it runnin by the 25th...gotta have it running so I can take it for a spin on my birthday, right?

Bad deal, man!!!

On the up side, lots of riders die from encounters like yours. Be thankful!!

There's alway the naked look. That's where I'm at now.

Ride safe

Fairing: Four screws you can see.

Two secret fasteners under bottom edge of fairing and near the fan. Mine were push outs and not screws. I think OEM is screws

Mirrors and disconnect the turn signals

And don't forget to disconnect the headlight.

After you get the fairing partly off you can disconnect the connector to the marker light.

The two small fasteners by the fan are OEM plastic fasteners - the same ones that are on the bottom of the tail section.

Fucking deer! Everyday should be hunting season when it comes to these pests.

I can't believe you didn't crash. Consider yourself extremely blessed. Parts are VERY cheap compared to your body damage so smile! :)

Glad you're okay and hope your leg feels better- you'll need it when you get to riding again! Amazing you kept it on two wheels. Good job of not panicking.

Good job keeping it off the ground.Jusy wondering when I'm gonna tangle with one of those cute killers.

RickB Jul 23, 2007 08:15 AM

Glad you're OK. Did you get any pictures yet? Did you bring home the deer?;)

Kendrick Jul 23, 2007 09:19 AM

Oh good someone else brought it up first, but yeah what happened to the deer? I guess you couldn't bring it back on the bike.

Otto Man Jul 23, 2007 02:58 PM

I broke its neck! lol

ali_squidz Jul 23, 2007 04:11 PM

Took pics today, but too tired and not enough patience to wait on dialup to upload them. Bike faired out extremely well for hitting a deer at 75. Pics will be uploaded tomorrow

nuhawk Jul 23, 2007 08:26 PM

You all have some deer back there that pack some weight. The ones around here are about the size of a Great Dane. Like the other guys have said you are very lucky and I hope your leg is feeling better. It's now past the day after the day after so you should be on the mend. Let us know what you need for parts.

VTRFan Jul 23, 2007 09:39 PM

Dude, sucks about your bike but glad you made it "through" the deer! A lot of other guys arent as lucky...hope you get the VTR up and screaming again!!! Good Luck!

Fogged up the headlight in a few spots, cracked the headlight housing. Not bad for tagging a deer at 75...whadda think?

futurehawk Jul 25, 2007 06:18 AM

totally sucks!

Man, what a bummer! I can't tell you how many deer (and elk) have attempted grill-icide on the trucks I drive at work to the coast and back. One of my co-workers hit a buck in a cabover and the horns came right through the metal into the cab. Missed him, but way freaky! Glad you're still walking around! Get 'er up again!

Hawk9807 Jul 25, 2007 03:10 PM

Good job keeping it rubber side down. Glad you are ok, sucks about the bike though.

nuhawk Jul 25, 2007 07:06 PM

Looks like the impact was high - where the hell were you??? The forks look ok - the triples might even be unmolested. It looks like you launched the beast - did you duck? or tucked already? Looks like a belly shot. These animals are immensely athletic. You are immensely athletic and immensely lucky - hell yeah! That's what tomorrow is all about! Get well quick and come out here and get some more! :winner: :winner: :winner:

My Dad is fairly good at fiberglass repair. He's patching the part of the fairing so I can get her back on the road again. It's not going to be pretty, but right now, having a running ugly bike is better than not having a bike at all. I'll fix it right and get a new fairing when the season starts winding down. Ideally, I'd pick up another superhawk and make this one an ultimate streetfighter, get a +10 sprocket for the rear, forget about the fairing completely....ohhhh yeah, I can see her now.

Igmortis Jul 27, 2007 07:42 PM

Scooters can be replaced....you can't.....Glad you're still with us!!!

Otto Man Jul 27, 2007 11:11 PM

Bike is back together! Too tired to clean it tonight at 2am, but I'll get her waxed up and take some pics for you guys. For hitting a deer at 75, the hawk faired out extremely well (As did I). Now just cross your fingers for decent riding weather this weekend!
