HELP!!

Ok, I recently obtained (2 weeks ago) a 1998 vtr and i love it! But, it wont hold a charge and even after riding the bike around my neighborhood it wont charge either. i know it has to be above 3k or so to charge properly, but wouldnt it have done something at all? I got a float charger thinking that might solve the issue, but even after charging it, the lights become dim after a few minutes. then when i shut the bike off, it wont start because the battery is dead again. could this be a bad battery? any help would be awesome!

99% chance you need a new R/R. May as well upgrade while you're at it. Look in tweety's MOSFET r/r thread and go from there.

It's best if you get a volt meter and see what the battery is doing when off, on, idling, and reving a little bit. Takes 5 minutes to check.

Edit: it likely undercharged your battery enough to need a new one of those too, but start by finding the cause of the problem.

thanks a lot for the advise! do you think the odds of the problem would be my stator? im really hoping not

Most likely as 7moore7 said, your R/R.

Thanks a lot folks! im going to buy a new one and see if that fixes it. i have to jump the bike when i ride it, but this bike is the most fun bike i've ever had. i owned an 06 gsxr and an 08 cbr600rr and neither one was as fun as this bike. i just need to get this problem fixed ASAP so i can start riding it daily

Don't just buy a new one! It will just brake again. Take 20 minutes and read the first six posts in that thread!

I've never heard of a faulty stator in a superhawk, stock R/Rs brake all the time.

And if is indeed the r/r, don't ride it. It won't charge the battery and you'll be stuck wherever you manage to get on the current battery charge.

EDIT: I even gave you the link. You don't have to even work for the info ;)

lol, i should have clarified, sorry! going to get one from the 04-06 R1. i can re-wire and solder. that link helped a lot. thank you very much! im still going to do some testing before spending any money

Ok good, sounds like you're on the right track ;) Just didn't want you shooting blank checks at the Honda store, you'd be surprised how much people do that , lol!

Yeah, dont make me tell my RR story of pushing the bike for miles under the Verazano bridge in Brooklyn in 101* heat. (with my wife pushing from behind). No fun. Oh BTW, your battery is likely toast too.
