Helmet locks???

anyone have or know of a helmit lock that will fit on a superhawk... im not shure where it would mount.. the subframe would be nice, but its square.. please help.. thanks!

This is going to be tough to explain, so bear with me, I'll try to get some pics posted this week. I got about 4 feet of 1/4" cable, put it around the subframe (under the seat) and clamped it to itself, so just one end of the cable is secured. Then made a loop, maybe 2 or 3" around at the other end and used a ferrule and taped it up so it won't scratch anything. When I want to lock my helmet I just pop the seat, run the cable through the chinbar, and put the loop on the factory "lock" under the seat, then put the seat back on and it's as safe as it probably can be. The plus side of using a long cable is that if were out and walking around, I run the cable through the sleeve of my jacket, and the helmet. Usually I put the helmet on the seat with my coat on top of it. No problems yet, and I've left it like this for several hours at Laconia. When I'm done, just coil it up and tuck it away under the seat. As with pretty much anything, if somebody wants it bad enough, they'll get it, at least this way the chinbar is what's locked, not the chinstrap, which is the easiest way for some douche to steal a helmet. The best part is it only cost about $7. Again, I'll get some pics up this week to clarify this.

Other thing you could do is just carry a couple feet of chain and a small padlock. Run the chain around the chinbar and frame/wheel etc and lock it. You can wrap all but the two end links with electrician's tape so nothing gets bunged up.

Why not just use the helmet lock that came on the bike? Or do you need more than one?

synaptik 04-22-2008 06:46 PM

i dont like the lock that came with mine, my helmet ends up on my exhaust

cliby 04-22-2008 06:57 PM

I don't loch my helmit - I taik it incide with mi.
safer, dryer etc etc

Hawkrider 04-22-2008 06:59 PM

:english:

I fixed the title.

RickB 04-23-2008 04:39 PM

You also lose that feature with a Corbin seat... I just take it with me usually.

Pimpsterbim1 04-23-2008 08:33 PM

ya i "speeled" helmet wrong... any way i dont like the stock one because i have to take off and put back on the seat, takes too long.. and i dont realy have a good place to put it at school.. so i was hoping for a lock that bolts to like the subframe or somthing like that.. i know there are some that bolt to the handle bars, but i dont think theres enough room on a superhawk..

VTRumble 04-25-2008 04:03 PM

Here's what I did. When I went to take pics, I realized how big and ugly the 1/4 " cable was, and redid it in 1/8". I figure if somebody has a tool to cut it, the size doesn't really matter (insert witty comment here). Plus the 1/8" is much easier to coil and store, and cost under $5 to do. I suppose you could make the same setup and use a padlock to secure it anywhere on the bike, then just coil it up and put it in your pocket, so you're not pulling the seat off all the time. It doen't bother me because I only use it a couple of times a year, of course I end with a pile of everybody elses stuff on there too so a longer cable works better. The last pic just shows it hanging, but I usually put it through my helmet and coat, then put them on the seat, and away from the exhasust.

VTRumble that's a great idea!

Stixx 04-25-2008 11:04 PM

I run these and love them. You can also slide the sleve of your jacket over the grip and then lock the helmet on. http://www.barender.com/

Pimpsterbim1 04-26-2008 07:44 AM

Those barenders are realy cool Stixx... but what size does a SH take??? and where is the best price???

thanks for all the advice!!

RickB 04-26-2008 05:48 PM

+1 on those barenders.

It takes the 7/8 inch. I'm not sure on the best price I bought mine from the home page. I use them nearly everytime I ride. I have the matched set, if you ever ride two up it is worth it. no worries at all of where either helmet will be when you get back to the bike.

Pimpsterbim1 04-26-2008 09:07 PM

cool man.. thanks!!

take the seat off.

look at the subframe.

find a open hook like thingy attached to the top rail.

thats your 'helmet lock'.

the d-rings go around the hook, your high-rise exhaust cooks your helmet and the sargeant seat doesn't work w/ it either, lol!

-1 on cooking the helmet. I haven't had that problem with my high mount Jardines. Dunno.

I have a Sargent seat and haven't had a problem using the stock helmet lock. Use it almost every day while I'm at work.
If I'm lazy and I'll only be gone a minute, I just leave the helmet sitting on my mirror. If somebody steals it, gives me an excuse to buy a newer, better helmet.

And the cooked helmet issue is a major reason why I haven't gone to a high-mount exhaust yet...

Well, if I wait fifteen minutes or so, I chance it...but all my locking needs are after a slow city ride which jacks the temps up over 205...

My KBC helmets won't fit, can't comfortably cram the wider sargent back on; I guess it depends on how long your D-ring strap is...

Where the heck is the factory helmet lock.

It's also shown in the first pic above. Look to the far right next to the white sticker ;)

I rarely use my lock either but the times I did, I never ran into any heat issues with my highmounts either.

Now that i have springbubbas 2-1 gixxer pipe, I just wraped a gun lock through the subframe,, leave it there all the time or through it in my tank bag, and when i need to i can lock my helmet with it.. works great!

After a search, I came up with this thread. I wanted to see what you guys used to lock your helmet up. I had NO idea what the heck that little piece of metal on the subframe was for! Didn't know we already had a stock helmet lock. Although, it's not the best lock.

CrankenFine 09-26-2014 01:29 PM

Zombie thread

Was recently pondering this very dilemma and hoping someone knew of a lock like bikes from the 70's had so I searched and found this long forgotten thread.

I think the gun lock sounds like something I'll try. I don't like the stock lock either and I have high mounts. I don't want to have to lift the seat either. If I find anything better I'll post it.
