Got a line on a 98' VTR - what would you pay?

Found a 98 VTR that has 36k.

Tires are kinda old, 10th week of 06, layed down on both sides, right engine cover pretty scuffed (owner said from 30 mph rear slide out), fox rear shock, supposed jet kit from first owner, supposed Two Brothers pipes (no metal tag saying so, there are no rivet holes where one would be), both sides of plastics are lightly scratched, one of the header pipes are dinged, no maintenance logs or receipts, it needs a new chain, and comes with a Honda repair manual.

Mechanically the bike looks and sounds fine.

First issues for me is the CCT not being replaced and also the is it the rectifier that tends to fry out? Any other things I should be paying attention to next time I go check out this bike?

Finally what would you estimate this bike is worth to you as many of you have been watching the prices of Superhawks longer than I.

Thanks in advance!

First of all, I think you mean 98.

You can find nice ones around the $3k mark; less for damage, more for pristine and/or very nice mods. I bought my current 96 VFR with lots of wreck damage but good title for $1k.

Yeah, the r/r and cct's are the only vtr specific things to check besides the usual had-a-hard-life kind of things everyone should check (brakes, chain, oil, air filter, etc).

I bought a 1998 2 years ago, cosmetically perfect, great running, completely stock, to include tires, 3200 miles, $2800 cash (price was a bit higher, but it needed tires due to age, and a “faulty clutch” so he dropped $400) New set of tires, fresh fluid in the brakes and clutch.. Good as new.

I have a Black 99 VTR for sale...Sargent, Racetech, Ohlins, V&H, Helibars and much, much more.

One owner, adult rider, clean & well sorted.

Ping me if interested.

I paid 2800 for 98 hawk. It came with LP tank bra, V&H SS2R Aluminum exhaust, fender eliminator, new tires (but they are old models, I think they are d207's), jetted (incorrectly but have corrected that since), and 20,018 miles on the clock. i think I did pretty well! The only thing it needed was a new headlight bulb, and chain.

So far, I've bought helibars, ape CCT's (yet to have them installed), new chain and sprockets, and a kick ass rapid transit tank bag. That's it for now...

I paid $2000 for my 2000 hawk with 500 miles on it. Bought it about a year ago, but it did not have the side fairings, and i got it as a basket case.

What's a basket case?

Something that a) needs a lot of work to make it right or b) comes in a basket full of parts and needs to be assembled.

I would pay no more than $2200 for the bike that the OP describes.

i payed $3000 for a cosmetically great 98 SH with penske shock, racetech front springs, sargent seat, yoshi pipes, jet kitted, ss brake lines, throttlemeister, soft saddle bags, tankbag, zg shield and bike cover. it had 30,000 on it at the time, had records for everything, and dyno sheets.

Two years ago I payed $2500 for a 2000 bone stock in near perfect shape w 50k miles on it. (R/R has since gone on it and been replaced)

The cheapest I could find a hawk was 6 months ago was 2600. Salvaged (but very well cleaned up, straight frame, no fork damage). Runs great.
