FUEL WHAT FUEL??
I recently Made the Switch from Moto-x and Enduro to Road bikes, i did own a Suzuki RM250 and a Honda CRF 450 both fantastic, but the honda was something else!
i wanted a bike that had presence on the road and that sounded like it would scare the infirm, women and children. i Love the V-Twin Thump so and was given a Honda Firestorm to fix and use, im only 23 i wanted the SP1 but the insurance wouldnt touch me. so the firestorm it was then! after Going out for a blast as you do, i was astonished to see the reserve light so soon! why is this Twin so poor on fuel? are all twin so poor on fuel? This is my only means of transport and i had no idea it would only get me 30 miles to the gallon, im a student and work part time. is there any mods i can easly do to alow it to use less fuel when i dont want to be opening up the throttle (other than not actuly opening up the throttle) i want to be able to enjoy this bike but also not to have to sell it and get a 600. i love giving it a blast on the B roads but when im not blasting it is there anything that can simply be done when its not being thrassed to alow for better MPG? LONG LIVE THE TWIN! |
best advise to save fuel would be to baby the throttle. these bikes just arent going to get great mpg, they have the biggest carbs honda ever made so im told. so basically 30mph isnt so bad my friends with 600 super sports dont get much if any better mileage. i know my hawk is always thirsty i say drink up as i roll on the gas.

Check what size sprockets it came with, most SH riders (or at least I) have changed the rear to a 43 or 44 tooth and the front down to a 15 tooth. I believe stock is 16/40, but that twin is so powerful you could probably go to a 17/38 without any problems.
I have 15/43 and I am very strong wristed, I get about 25mpg if I am lucky. |
Well the superhawk/firestroms have really small gas tanks, even thought I think you have a 19 liter instead of 16(which is what superhawk's have), and two really big 48mm crabs (biggest one that Honda has put on a street bike). So, gas goes really quick if you open the throttle. But it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to take. :)

One of the smallest tanks, and the largest carbs ever put on an OEM Honda.. Add in it's a blast to ride... This is not an econo cruiser... It's a fun sport bike.
|
Check that the carb's are synced.
On the slab I can get low 40's, if I stay out of it (with stock sprockets). |
I have seen 50mpg before on a roadtrip going 65 with stock gearing

What are you paying for "petrol" now? Over here we're back down under $2/gallon. I think that works out to about 3 litres for a pound sterling in U.K. speak. |

Which equates to you getting 3 liters at the about same price as I get one around here... Dammit... And this is the lowest gas price in Sweden since 2001...

Fuel isn't cheep at all here it's a joke! We pay from 88pence to a pound per L of standard unleaded petrol.
Bugga me those are big carbs! I'm loveing the grunt tho it kills my mates R6 from the lights and out the corners. The bike is totaly standard, it's a 2000 model naught new in 2002 so I think it may have this smaller tank then. One more thing how far will it genealy go or run for on the reserve light? I've done about 10 miles on the reserve light today and it's 2 miles to the petrol station will It cope? As I have still screwed the ass off it in reserve? Hope I don't bin this bike it has a massive gin factor! |
I use my trip, depending on how hard I ride I'll fuel up at 120miles which is about 190km
I am also a student and work part time, I know how you feel about the shitty gas mileage (even thought you have to pay a lot more than I do). I just try to be easy on the throttle, but its really hard. ;) |

I think there is about a 1 gal reserve, so figure around 30 miles til empty, but I wouldn't push it. I fill up within about 10 miles of the light coming on.

This is an old thread about the mileage you can squeeze from a VTR if you ride it like your grandma would. |

I know for a fact I would... (or CTW4F) |
Actually 32 is what I got from RLOD to CTW4F last I tried... But then I was riding like the turtle grandma passed on the way to church... Usually around 15-20 wich should cover seb going to the station...
|
i cant say that i ever pay any attention to my mpg cause im allways ready for a break before im out of gas.

My reserve light comes on around 140 miles and takes about 3.2 gallons to fill her up at that point if I stop at a station. I only run "AvGas" 100 Octane in my bike unless I am away from home or road tripping.

I know I'm down here in Texas where the oxygen is rich, but I didn't think it'd make that much difference. I'm getting nearly 150 miles on a tank BEFORE the light comes on, and that's on stock gears (16-41). 30 miles after the light isn't a stretch, but it doesn't allow much play either. All of that is with me rolling at least 75% on the throttle. Not light handed at all....
|
CTW4F....Lemme guess: Call The Wife For Fuel?
|
Damn, I really need to balance and jet my carbs. 150? 120, then maybe 20 miles after the light. Dunno what it would be if I kept my wrist out of it. Normal cruise is 85 MPH.
