Engine Cut Off
Hi Guys
I already asked for help regarding this meter but that thread went in other direction :D So what is a problem with my 38000Km Hawk. Everything is stock except Kerker C/F mufflers Bike tends to quit at traffic light (more and more often I find) When riding at lower RPM around 3000RPM and at steady speed only (not moving throttle) engine will tend to cut off, like playing with switch on and off and sometimes noise will come from engine (clank) I almost lost control over my bike the other day as I was leaning on the bike when I started losing traction due to engine cut off. I checked my carburetors and they are perfectly balanced. Any help with be appreciated Thanks |

I'm experienced with bikes but quite new to the Hawk. I'm guessing the clank you here is likely just some gear/clutch/cush hub slop triggered by the engine dying suddenly..like you might get by turning throttle on and off suddenly. I we will need more info to really help. Sounds electrical, if it "suddenly" dies and then just as "suddenly" comes back to life. If it fades away until dead and the staggers to get back running that could well be a fuel issue. Think about what it does...describe in as much detail as you can..There's lot's of experienced guys her...we are all busy riding..but on rainy days or cold evenings..Let's help this guy.. We need info.. It will be fixable....start looking at all main electrical connectors..clean with WD 40..give them a coating of dielectric grease...ask hardware, electrical guys...poor electrical connections can be wierd...

Hmm I am positive problem is not related to electrical, it has to be fuel problem.
Imagine yourself riding bike at constant speed in same gear after 5-6 seconds it stars dying and coming back, as soon as you change speed (RPM) it goes away. And this occur always around 3000RPM I guess if it would be electrical it will be more likely to affect engine at any speed. Also when it dies at traffic light if fires right back. |
Sounds like fuel to me. Have you taken the tank off recently, or done anything with the carbs or airbox?

It sounds to me like you need to rejet. I think you're running lean enough that you might be getting a backfire through the carbs in a certain rpm range.
Where do you live? There may be an experienced member near you to help you out. Also, do a search on the site for recommendations on which kit and some baseline settings. |

I am a new member and this is my first post. I have been looking for someone with this problem as I have a similar one. My bike will die at lights and stop signs too, maybe 1 out of 20 stops. I have read I should open the gas tank to relieve vacuum pressure. I'm in Hawaii so it is hot, seems to help a little. But the real worry is the clanking or popping noise that occurs while running at steady low RPM (approx 3000). This problem is getting worse as time goes by. I have removed the tank several times and had service to clean the carbs. It appears that one of the grey foam strips in the snorkle (airbox intake) came loose and got sucked into the carbs (no idea why they are in there???)bike would not run at all. Ran fine at first once clean, but problem started soon after and getting scary. Bike is '99 and has 25,000 mi. and I have had it since 21,500 mi. The hawk for the most part is stock. I knocked the baffles out of the stock pipes. Feels like a timming problem, but I really have no idea. Any help would be great. |
Make sure your TPS is adjusted correctly, see KB section. Cheap and known to fix idle related issues, mine was set at 920 ohms and it died all the time. Not sure about the 3k symptoms though.

I removed K&N air filter I had installed and replace it with Honda stock filter
This improved performance and engine does not cut off any more. I will live this update here in case someone else can experience same problem in future |
